On Sunday, December 9, at 9 pm there is a two-hour special on the History Channel entitled “1968 with Tom Brokaw.” Brokaw will be discussing the events of 1968 and showing a lot of footage from that time period. During the program he will be talking a little bit about Capt Gene Kimmel, KIA with VMO-2 in 1968.
"He and my dad were good friends in college in the early 60’s. In 1968, my dad was a Captain in the Marine Corps flying the Bronco OV-10 in his second tour of duty in Vietnam. On October 22, 1968 he was killed in action.
This summer, Brokaw’s staff contacted me about a book he was writing (Boom!) and this documentary he was doing on 1968. They asked if I had any photographs or other information that might help them. I sent them a bunch of photos, details of his life, and even some Super 8mm film footage I transferred to digital. I was told that several of the photos will be in the second edition of the book and that some of the video footage will be in the two-hour special. The book was recently published and has a couple pages about my dad. By the way, the book is dedicated to my dad (and two other guys)."
