FINALLY, after two years of VA procrastination/rejection (my hearing has declined from 1969 to 1991 when I finally failed a hearing test) the VA has authorized a private org to do a hearing test...still, tho, they insist on using amplified earphones...but at least they now use static and women's/men's voices...if they used the TV, they would see I'd be at mach 27, same with radio, if they just used the staff outside in the lobby, they would save $ and realize that one just doesn't hear...and for a reason.
What's really baffling to me is that most of the gunnery people (I live near to an artillery base) get the disability most rickey tickey. We have no permanent helo folks here...just the deployment units that pass thru on their way to o're yonder.

What Did You Say?

I receive a small disability payment, mostly for a cancer believed to be caused by Agent Orange.

In going through the process, my Virginia State rep told me to report that I had a hearing problem. Well I do, and that's the truth!

Long story short: hearing test; VA letter stating in legal language that flying / working around helicopters causes hearing loss.

The money doesn't amount to a hill of beans, but someone out there seems to know something, have compassion, or both.

In reading all the posts about VA disability it appears that there are too many inconsistencies in adjudicating Veteran's claims. From a fairness standpoint it just isn't right.

There, I posted my two cents!

Hearing test

I still say any meeting held about Tinnitus should have a background noise equivalent to what we hear all the time. I think that might change some of the decisions they render. Also, it is amazing that hearing test haven't changed over the years. When the VA sent me to a private audiologist he put me in the booth and started the test when I ask him, do you think I should take my hearing aids out first? Seems to me the first thing they would do is look in your ears. I have only had one do that. Oh yeah, just for fun, when you are in the waiting room at the private Dr., when they call your name just set there like you can't hear them.
Doesn't take much to entertain me sometimes!

Hearing .........

When I took my discharge physical in December 1968 (that sounds like a long time ago) I flunked, I was deaf. They, the squids in sick bay, told me I had to sign a waiver stating that I would not come back on the Marine Corps, Government, etc or I would not be separated. Where do I sign. They also told me there was nothing that could be done.

Flash forward 41 years and many hearing test later, and being told nothing would help, the VA ask if I would like hearing aids, huh? what did you say? I picked them up on Wednesday 1/6/10, It's good that I waited because they match my grey hair. I keep thinking back to the years of fighting with my wife over asking her what, what, plus the 37 years of disability for hearing loss I didn't get. My wife finally made me go to the VA and I started receiving the big 10% in 05.

Hearing aids

Do hearing aids mask the constant ringing or just amplify sound to be heard over the ringing?

hearing

As far as I can tell, the hearing aids don't help the ringing at all. I gave up even wearing them for the most part. Still trying to figure out how I have hearing loss in only one ear'but VA gave me hearing aids for both ears and the ringing is also in both ears! They just don't want to come up off that 10%.

Clear to turn sir:eek:

I have only had mine a few days however, I think they amplify the secondary sounds and don't seem to help in conversations. I was told that they take a while to get used to, so I use them for a while before passing judgment.

Hearing ?? Huh

I got scheduled for VA physical in November 2009 in Dallas Va Hospital. Made my day long appointment after driving 180 miles to get there. First stop was Audiology. Filled out paper work and 5 minutes later was tested. Was told I haad high freq hearing loss both ears and some low freq loss both ears. Was scheduled for hearing aids. Picked them upp yesterday. Very good can now hear car stereo and friends whispering. Got letter from VA this morning saying they did not find enugh loss to make a percentage change. Still rated as 0 % but service connected. Real crazy situation. Oh well. I tried.

I thought I just had a phone ringing in my head

Guys,
I had no idea so many of us have that infernal ringing in the ears. For me, sometimes it totally drowns out my wife....not all that bad...but it does piss off my boss, at work. He is half my age and never had his head in the intake of a turbojet. Walnut shelling a Huey is not only hard on the knuckles...damn short-shaft....but rough on the longevity of hearing. Hearing protection?? I think I read about those, I know the Navy had plenty, we just had cigarette filters..
If I understand correctly, they very generous VA is allowing a disability for hearing loss and ......did someone hear the phone ring...??

Wally, I still am unable to post so can you please post the following:

I have had severe tinnitus (sic) for many years. I have never had the time or inclination to chase the VA down about it, so I just put up with it. A few weeks ago I tried a product that in my case has provided quick and almost complete relief in less than 5 days. The product is "Quietus", a homeopathic pill taken twice a day. If you google quietus it will lead you to their website and an 800 number. 3 months supply cost me about $ 190.00, but it is well worth it.

Quietus

I have heard (barely) the commercials for Quietus. Has anyone else tried this product?

Seems to be a decent product, but definitely lacks the herbal punch which the most effective remedies available for Tinnitus today pack.
• Ginkgo Biloba is excellent for a number of cerebral and circulatory disorders. It is probably the most widely-used herb for tinnitus and many sufferers swear by this natural ingredient.
• Rosemary dilates and strengthens blood vessels and is an excellent circulation tonic. Rosemary is particularly useful for tinnitus that is caused or worsened by high blood pressure and other circulatory conditions.
