Just checking to see if there is enough interest to organize a ride on Friday 7/9/2004. I have already contacted Harley in Reno and asked about a discount. I am thinking that since Friday has only one scheduled program (golf tournament) and is the day for the squadron dinners it would be an appropriate time for a ride. I have been told that a ride to Virginia City (site of Bonanza) and Lake Tahoe could easily be accomplished in the 6 hour rental time for the bikes. If you have interest, please let me know. This is not a Popasmoke sponsered event. I like to ride, I have ridden in the last 8 Rolling Thunders, and would love to see the West on a 2 wheeled convertible!!!!!

I would hope to get 20 people to ride that day.

Count me in! Any ride in the summer around the Lake Tahoe area is worth taking. I'd suggest meeting at the Reno Hilton or a local coffee shop at a designated time and picking a place around the lake to head to for breakfast.

FYI I'll be riding to the Pop A Smoke Reunion on my 1982 GL1100 Goldwing Interstate. So far (for the Honda folks) I haven't found a dealer that rents Hondas in the Reno area, but I'll keep looking for a motorcycle renter that can give us rental choices other than Harleys. :p

If I find such an outfit I'll come back here with an additional posting and the scuttlebutt.

Tahoe Ride

Larry, you are 100% right on regardng the beauty of a ride from Reno to Lake Tahoe. Especially in the month of July. It can be accomplished well within in the alloted time.
For those that do not ride a bike, they could take the car and make a day at the Ponderosa Ranch and a Lake Tahoe cruise. Both could be done in plenty of time and still be back for a squadron dinner.

Reunion MC Ride

Sounds like a plan. Count me in.

John, how do you like your 04 Road Star? I ride a 2000 Road Star Silverado. Great bike. Rides like a Harley Fat Boy, except no oil slick and stuff does not fall off.

Reunion Motorcycle Ride for Experienced Riders ONLY

Just a heads up to all you folks thinking about joining Larry Zok and I for the Reunion Motorcycle Ride ... you need to be an experienced rider that can handle small, narrow, windy mountain roads with uphills and downhills and 15MPH first and second gear turns. It's a beautiful ride around Lake Tahoe but demanding.

Semper Fi, Marines! 😎

reunion motor cycle ride

sounds like the kind of riding we do up here, around Mt. St. Helens then up and over to Mt, Ranier - 350 miles + just for a hamburger at eagle crest and a piece of pie at spiffies on the way home.

Harley Display

I thought any of the people interested in the ride would also like to know that the Reno National Automobile Museum will be having a special showing of Harley-Davidson cycles from various eras during our Reunion time. The museum is located in downtown Reno about 5 minutes from the Hilton.

HMM-163 is having their squadron dinner at the musuem on Friday evening after it closes to the public.

Posting this for John:
----------------------------------------------------
Hi guys, This e-mail is going out to anyone that might be nterested in riding their bikes from Memphis,TN to Reno for the reunion. We would probably leave the 3rd or 4th of July & ride 300 to 400 miles a day to get there. Larry Zok wants to do a ride around Lake Tahoe Friday while we are in Reno. We might ride over to see the CA. redwoods after the reunion & then head back eastbound. If anyone thinks they want to join us just give me an e-mail or call me at 901-751-8655. Hopefully the webmasters can splash this out to the membership also. Looking forward to the ride.

Reno Ride

Listen UP!!!

Just got off the phone with HD of Reno. They have 10 bikes left to rent for the 9th and to his knowledge, there are no other bike rental places in Reno. They have 2 Heritage Soft Tails, 1 Duece, 1 Night Train, 1 Fat Boy, 2 Dyna Wide Glides, 1 Lowrider and 2 Road Kings. They said that we could do the ride to Lake Tahoe and the Ponderosa at Incline Village by 1500, even leaving at 0900 from HD of Reno. I am getting really excited about this. Hope that there a number of you "riding in" for the reunion.

Larry:cool:

PS - Phone number for Reno HD is 775.329.2913 and ask for Sal.

Rental Rates

The rates at HD Reno go from $95/6 Hrs to $135/6 Hrs with a $1,000 deposit on a major credit card. You can call Sal at the number shown in the earlier notam. There is also a place at the Hilton that is opening this month, but they want a $3,000 deposit. Little too rich for me!!

Reunion Motorcycle Ride

Since my wife and I are coming to the Reunion on our ride, a trip around Lake Tahoe sounds like a lot more fun than golf (I never have figured out which end of that club to use). Where can we find out the details, such as where to meet, what time to start, etc.

I am also interested in a ride to Virginia City. I will be riding my Ultra from LA on the 4th or 5th of July. Anybody heading up 395 around that time. After the reunion I will be leaving around Wed for home in Michigan, anybody heading that way.

Reunion Ride

Gentlemen & Ladies

JD has given me permission to hold a pre-ride brief in the SNAFU room on Thurs the 8th at 1600 (4 PM civilian time). We can discuss whether or not we want to go by the Ponderosa or just ride around the Lake, whatever. I will have maps available for everyone in case we get seperated. I have e-mailed Sal at HD Reno asking if he would come to the Hilton at 1600 on Thurs to take care of the paperwork on the rentals - will let you know what he says. Getting really excited about this!!!!

Larry,

It's a good thing to ride around Tahoe. The last time I rode Tahoe was July 1996 with fellow HOGgers from AZ. We had to put on leathers in the high spots. It got a bit chilly. I just came through Reno on a road trip to/from Oregon. The temp was a high 90'ish and 60'ish in the morning down in the valley areas.

I'm renting a Heritage for Thursday July 8th to leave out from HD rental center at Buell about 9:45 AM to be back at 4PM. It's not far from the Hilton, but it's on a service road off of Glendale, (Market?). (775) 329-2913. They have lots of bikes and may still have some available for Thursday. Friday and the weekend may get tighter.

My route is to go through Carson City to Hwy 50 west to the lake and go north. That's less than 50 miles. It should be about 80-90 miles around the lake. The first stop will be at the Ponderosa before Incline Village. Maybe lunch there. (There's the Railroad Museum in Carson City some may want to stop at, but I don't want to linger too long at any one place with the rental on the clock.)

Then around the north end of the lake through North Lake Tahoe with maybe a stop at the Kaisor mansion (in Godfather movie). We don't plan on any major stops, but we can check out the boat ride or something for another day.

Next we'll go around the south end of the lake through Stateline/Heavenly Valley area and maybe check out the beach. There is supposed to be some sailboat cannibal races that weekend.

Back up to Hwy 50, we'll go back through Carson City to Virginia City and hang out there for a bit until we need to get the bike back.

That's the plan. If any one wants to join us, come on down.

Keep the sunny side up.
