Today was my Birthday
There was Bridge to play
A day to relax, reflect
My wishes didn’t seem to be
It was a so so day
Went to dinner
My wife and me
Food was good
Atmosphere relaxed
A couple tables over
Five Marines and Two wives
Celebrating,
A Colonel Retiring
Dressed in civvies
Still plain to see
They loved their leader
And gave him gifts
Tried to catch their eye
Didn’t want to interrupt
Instead I bought them a round
It was my gift to Him and Them
He came to my table
And said to me
As I started to get up
“Sir, please don’t get up,
Shaking my hand. "thank you.”
"You're welcome," ..."No, ...Thank you.”
I felt good
I felt better
It didn’t matter
It was his day.
