Went through Basic School, Flight School, and served with Sid at Marble Mountain. Sid was a regular at all reunions, we are all going to miss him. Semper Fi Marine.

Sid Baker

He always had a smile and a laugh. Nothing got him down.

He flew lots of gun cover support for me. I was always glad to hear his call sign. He was damn good.

Hello Marines,

I am an Army Gunship pilot and platoon leader, Vietnam, C models and G Cobras, 1968-1969. Sid Baker and his wife, Yvonne were close friends to me and my wife, Susan, in Iran, from 1975-1978. We rode dirt bikes, partied together for those years. He must have been an excellent Marine, for he was an excellent human being. He was my flight commander upon our arrival there. They gave me a choice, teach primary or teach J-Cobras. Let's see? Uhm, uhh Cobras!?! What do you think?

Sid Baker was the absolutely funniest person I ever met. Many of the instructor pilots were Marines. The J-Cobras were theirs. Piloting and instructing are quite different things. Many left. Our flight had the best graduation percentage of all. Why? We loved to fly and teach them to do the impossible, or improbable. We taught them to fly.

A lot of Marines were there when I arrived, John Upthegrove, Dink Crow, and others, barely manageable, and, usually, embarrassing. Baker was the rare Gentleman. A great pilot, and a true American, I loved him as a friend and a brother. My life is diminished by his loss.

Farewell to a fine Marine and Pilot

As a Crew Chief with HML-367 I knew Sid real well. He was one of the finest Marines I have had the pleasure of knowing. He was always smiling and absolutely, always had something good say about anything that was going on. He could find the upside, to even a mission that didn't go too well.
At our reunions, Sid was always there, manning his booth with his caps and shirts. Again, always smiling. When I would buy a cap from him, he always put second one in the bag for me. His memory was to be astonishing. He could recall situations we were in together with amazing clearity.
He was a very kind man. He will be so very missed by everyone who knew him and future reunions won't quite be the same without him.
There is no question, I am a better Marine for having knowing, Lt. Sid Baker. May God have mercy and Chesty welcome him home.
