Phil, I received this on my guest book - I responded to him that I will forward to you. Maybe you have a listing for this guy.

Semper Fi and Happy New Year
Sam Beamon

The recent death (2 Jan 09 cancer) of USMC HHM-164 vet, Sgt.Ben A McMillon, caused me to find your site.

Ben was our employee and friend for 17 years.

His DD-214 listing of the DFC w/Gold Star, the Presidential Unit Citation, Navy Commendation Medal,Purple Heart and two Air Medals among the commendations noted on the 214,leads to my writing.

Did you know Ben? Can you fill in any details? It would be greatly appreciated.

Ben was an admired and respected employee. ce record. I asked about it 10 days ago and all he said was that it "involved support of the 26th Marines at Khe Sanh".

I am preparing an obituary for those who worked with and for Ben. Younger men might benefit from knowledge of the sacrifices all of you in HMM-164 made.

Thanking you in advance.

Sam,
had a Ben McMillan in HMM-165. He extended at least once from the Ky Ha crew in '67 until I left in November of 1968. Same guy?

Afraid so, Joe. Check the 165 website. In the photo section, Ben appears a couple of times on the 1967 page . I wasn't aware he'd served with 164. It's always hard to say good-bye, especially to one of our own. I remember Ben as a quiet, "get-it-done-and-get-on-with-it" guy. No fanfare. We were a better outfit for having him with us. I can't imagine him sick, let alone gone.

Semper Fi, Ben.

Ben was one of the "good" guys for sure! He's in the squadron photos when we were on the USS Tripoli and that was summer of 1968.......I remember a time when check crew had done his bird's 28 day check and while taxiing back in after thday's flight the L. main wheel assy. ran nearly off because that hadn't adjusted and secured it properly...He shrugged it off and said "happens all the time, no big deal"!! That was how I met Ben. I stayed on the flight line (I was on CC then, but hadn't done his bird) for a while and helped him pack the new bearings and get them on the plane....I was blown away by his LACK of temper or ego!!
RIP Ben...:(

I have Ben McMillon on HMM - 165 sqdn. rosters 7/67 - 2/69 and then again
6/69 - 4/70. I don't believe he was ever in 164, typo error I think.I only served with him a couple of months before I rotated home in 67, but we caught up at a couple of squadron reunions he attended. No doubt in my mind that he was a good man, and a good Marine.
