It is my sad duty to report that Col. Leonard Bieberbach recently passed.
He served with VMO-2 and HML-167
He was commissioned a second lieutenant upon graduating from West Chester (State College) University in 1962. He was then assigned to the 4th Marine Brigade where he served as Platoon Commander and Executive Officer of an Infantry Company. In 1965, he was designated a Naval Aviator. As an Aviator, he served with the First and Second Marine Aircraft Wings. During his tour with the 1st MAW, he saw action in the Republic of Vietnam flying 480 combat missions during his 13 months in county.
Col. Bieberbach was awarded the Bronze Star with Combat “V”, the Air Medal for heroic action, twenty four (24) Air Medals for aerial achievements, the Navy Commendation Medal with Combat “V”, the Marine Corps Combat Action Ribbon and the Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Silver Star before retiring in June 1992.
