Carl Nimz loved the outdoors so much that he convinced his parents to let him finish school through the U.S. Marine Corps.
Nimz's family said he was a determined but friendly man who inspired his sons to serve in the military as well. He died March 20 at age 73.
Nimz joined the Marine Corps just as the Korean War ended in 1953. He was a mechanic who tested helicopters and repaired communications equipment while stationed in Japan.
