I have question for those of you who are in the Osprey community. A very good friend of mine, Gysgt Gary Leader was killed in one of the first accidents during the initial testing of this aircraft. Can anyone provide me with the details of that accident? Gary and I served together on the drill field and with HML-267 back in mid 70's. Thanks. S/F

Bonehead
There is a book entitled "The Dream Machine" and it's about the Osprey. If I remember correctly there is a section on the particular crash that you are referring to.
Re: GySgt Gary Leader
Ospreys in the mid 70's?? I don't think so, Sir.
Re: GySgt Gary Leader
Joe
They served with HML-267 in the mid 70's - not an Osprey squadron - capish??
Re: GySgt Gary Leader
Well Bonehead, the 22 that crashed killing the 19 Marines flipped, and nose dived into the LZ. I talked to an eye witness to it happening about 6 days ago, and I wouldn't have believed him had he not grown up with my Son, and was a S/Sgt at the time. He had just been let off this 22 during an exercise, and it went back after another load of troops. It was about 200 ft. or so AGL, and on final when it flipped, and nose dived into the zone while he was watching it. Sad, but thats the way it happened. He would not ride another one the rest of his time in the Corps. Semper Fi, and READY-APP.

I had lost track of Gary after leaving HMH-267 in Jan '80 and never realized that he was involved with the Osprey. I learned of his death many years later. S/F

Bonehead
Your friend was not in the Marana crash that Ace mentioned above. He was in the Quantico crash in 1992. In the book referenced above, info on him can be found on pages 214-215 & 218-233.

Re: GySgt Gary Leader
Larry,
Gary and Sean were great Marines- They are missed.
Re: GySgt Gary Leader
Thanks for the information concerning this particular incident. As it turned out, Gary and I did meet up again in the late 80's in Okinawa. He was with 267 at Futenma and I was over at Camp Foster with E 2/12. I've tried to upload a picture but this program is not allowing me. If I can figure it out, I'll post it. Thanks again for all the info. S/F

Re: GySgt Gary Leader
Larry, I thought any info of any 22 crash could help some. Hate Gy/Sgt Leader wasn't lost in combat as a Marine should when its our time. Semper Fi, and READY-APP. (The time of this post was 21:23, not 09:18 as shown).

MSGID/GENADMIN/CMC WASHINGTON DC//
SUBJ/MV-22 100,000 FLIGHT HOUR MILESTONE// GENTEXT/REMARKS/1. TO THE MARINES, SAILORS AND CIVILIANS OF THE
MV-22 COMMUNITY, CONGRATULATIONS ON ACHIEVING 100,000 TOTAL FLIGHT HOURS IN THE OSPREY. ON 10 FEBRUARY 2011, AN MV-22 SUPPORTING OPERATION ENDURING FREEDOM CROSSED THIS SIGNIFICANT AVIATION THRESHOLD. IT IS FITTING THAT THIS MILESTONE WAS ACHIEVED DURING COMBAT OPERATIONS IN AFGHANISTAN, GIVEN THE CONSTANT OPERATIONAL TEMPO THE OSPREY COMMUNITY HAS MAINTAINED SINCE ITS INCEPTION.
2. THE OSPREY COMMUNITY HAS PROVEN ITS METTLE DURING COMBAT AND IN EXTREME ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS DURING NINE DEPLOYMENTS TO IRAQ, AFGHANISTAN AND ABOARD AMPHIBIOUS SHIPS AT SEA. THE UNPRECEDENTED AGILITY AND OPERATIONAL REACH THE OSPREY PROVIDES TO OUR COMBATANT COMMANDERS - AND MARINES THROUGHOUT THE OPERATING FORCES - CONTINUES TO DEMONSTRATE ONE OF THE MANY CAPABILITIES WE POSSESS AS AMERICA'S EXPEDITIONARY FORCE IN READINESS. HOWEVER, IT IS NOT THE AIRFRAME, BUT THE PEOPLE WHO MAINTAIN AND OPERATE THE MV-22 THAT HAVE ACHIEVED THIS MILESTONE. THE UNPARALLELED SUCCESS OF THE MV-22 IS A DIRECT RESULT OF THE HARD WORK AND PROFESSIONALISM OF THE MARINES, SAILORS AND CIVILIANS WHO FLY, FIX AND SUPPORT THIS AIRCRAFT.
3. AS A RESULT OF THE EFFORTS OF THE ENTIRE OSPREY COMMUNITY - AND MARINE AVIATION AS A WHOLE - THIS TRANSFORMATIONAL AIRCRAFT HAS ACHIEVED 100,000 TOTAL FLIGHT HOURS WHILE MAINTAINING THE LOWEST CLASS 'A' FLIGHT MISHAP RATE OF ANY USMC ROTORCRAFT SINCE 9/11. TO ALL THE MEN AND WOMEN WHO HAVE PLAYED A PART IN THE ACHIEVEMENT OF 100,000 FLIGHT HOURS, THANK YOU AND CONGRATULATIONS.

Re: GySgt Gary Leader
I found a picture of Gary and myself, taken in Aug'80 in Okinawa. We had just returned from a day at the beach along with my wife, so we had a BBQ at my off base apartment. Gary and I had some great times during our annual two week's of training at NAS Fallon,NV with HML-267. Semper Fi Gary
