I have question for those of you who are in the Osprey community. A very good friend of mine, Gysgt Gary Leader was killed in one of the first accidents during the initial testing of this aircraft. Can anyone provide me with the details of that accident? Gary and I served together on the drill field and with HML-267 back in mid 70's. Thanks. S/F

There is a book entitled "The Dream Machine" and it's about the Osprey. If I remember correctly there is a section on the particular crash that you are referring to.

Well Bonehead, the 22 that crashed killing the 19 Marines flipped, and nose dived into the LZ. I talked to an eye witness to it happening about 6 days ago, and I wouldn't have believed him had he not grown up with my Son, and was a S/Sgt at the time. He had just been let off this 22 during an exercise, and it went back after another load of troops. It was about 200 ft. or so AGL, and on final when it flipped, and nose dived into the zone while he was watching it. Sad, but thats the way it happened. He would not ride another one the rest of his time in the Corps. Semper Fi, and READY-APP.

I had lost track of Gary after leaving HMH-267 in Jan '80 and never realized that he was involved with the Osprey. I learned of his death many years later. S/F

Your friend was not in the Marana crash that Ace mentioned above. He was in the Quantico crash in 1992. In the book referenced above, info on him can be found on pages 214-215 & 218-233.

Thanks for the information concerning this particular incident. As it turned out, Gary and I did meet up again in the late 80's in Okinawa. He was with 267 at Futenma and I was over at Camp Foster with E 2/12. I've tried to upload a picture but this program is not allowing me. If I can figure it out, I'll post it. Larry, I thought any info of any 22 crash could help some. Hate Gy/Sgt Leader wasn't lost in combat as a Marine should when its our time. Semper Fi, and READY-APP. (The time of this post was 21:23, not 09:18 as shown).

I found a picture of Gary and myself, taken in Aug'80 in Okinawa. We had just returned from a day at the beach along with my wife, so we had a BBQ at my off base apartment. Gary and I had some great times during our annual two week's of training at NAS Fallon,NV with HML-267. Semper Fi Gary
