I hope I am doing this right. This is all very confusing to me. The picture you are trying to identify is most certainly NOT the Marine side of Phu Bai. There were NO Quanset Huts on that side of the runway in 1968. In fact, I don't believe there were any on the Army side either. The Army and Division had all the old French buildings, while the Marine helicopter warriors were reduced to living in hardback tents, with no air conditioning, cold, outdoor showers, shared with hootch maids scrubing flight suits, and laughing at our manhood while we showered in the same enclosure. I am so new at this, I have no idea if this is really going out to who I think it is. Please let me know if this gets posted. Thanks, Robbie.

Just a minor correction. When I arrived at Superchief (HMM-163) at Phu Bai in July 1967, we were already in SEA Huts rather than hard backed tents. Later when we moved to Quang Tri after a short tour on ship, we got Quonset Huts in the Spring of 1968. I don't remember about Phu Bai, but it seems strange that we would get anything at Quang Tri before every one in the Wing got taken care of.

Brook is Correct, they were at Phu Bai for HMM-363 Officers in the summer of 1968, the troops got the new double decker wooden barracks and the Officers got these

Note the framework for the Quanset huts in the distance. Spring 1968

Well, shut my mouth. I admit that I was FUBAR on this subject. So, who is the guy in the photo?

Phu Bai '68

George is right again, as usual. It was some time in latter part of '68 that we moved from tents to the fine quanset hut quarters for pilots in the MAG. Sure was an improvement, but I don't know who that is in the photo. Claude King (HML-367)

re: Who is that in the photo?

I am the one jumping off the sand bags but I am trying to identify the dark haired one in front of the door. I think I know who it is but I need confirmation. His name is not on our roster while there but he lived in our quanset (the one in the picture.)

😀 :p 😉

Marine in the picture-Phu Bai-68

Brook-I am pretty sure the Marine in the background is Tim Rose. Of course, with age and everything I could be wrong. By the way these were the hootches at Phu Bai in 68. I remember the dead cat in the water tanks-:)
