I would like to find the pilot, or pilots that crash landed in an amunition storage area on 11 jan. 1970 in vietnam. I believe the pilot did survive but not sure about the co-pilot. They were caring ROK Marines, and it happened about 1:45pm. If you know about this crash or the pilot please respond.

James

CH-46D 153401 (HMM-263) crashed and burned at III MAF Helipad approx 1330 on 11 Jan 70.

Casualties (per HMM-263 Command Chronology) were 1stLt WM Kempffer (pilot) WIA, 1stLt RH Kunkle (copilot) WIA, LCpl JC Young (crew chief) WIA, Cpl MR James (gunner) KIA.

1st MAW Command Chronology lists it as Operational Loss due to material failure.

Co-Pilot Kunkle

We left Da Nang together at the end of our tour, November 1970, so I know he made it.

He must be around somewhere.

Co-Pilot Kunkle

Crashing into an ammo dump had to be engine failure. I would believe it was contaminated fuel, or bad ECA's. Glad all made it, but sad for the gunner. When a Bird is going to go down, its going down, without much control, of where. Semper Fi, and READY-APP.
