I am interested in finding out know when or where, but I do know he was killed in a crash in Okinawa in May of 1975. I was 4 then. I served in the Marines from 1990-1994 as an infantryman. I did Security Forces for a couple of years, then got stationed at Pendelton with 1/1 "B" Co. I have always been curious about what kind of Marine my dad was. I've heard stories of when he was at home, but I know that's not the whole story. I don't have a lot of information on him other than the basics. Any help would be appreciated. His name was Capt. Roy Dean "Okie" Newman, I was born In Quantico, so I I know he was stationed there in 1971. Other than that, I don't know what else I can tell you. As I said, any information, photos, etc, from anyone that knew him would be greatly appreciated. By the way, I have been interested for a long time in helicopters (I plan on getting my license sometime in the near future), and the Vietnam War.
Thanks in advance, Tony Newman

Sir
I believe that your father was with HMM-263 in Quantico. He was a CH-46 pilot. In fact, I think he was on a med cruise in 1972 when I was discharged because another officer signed my discharge papers for him. I think he was the S-1 Officer. I am sorry for your loss, I did not know that he was killed in 1975. Maybe another 263 member can help you more.

This might help, perhaps Earl Burks would have more information.
Capt Roy Newman
I was MCAS Quantico Operations Officer June 71 to Feb 73. Capt Newman was an Asst Ops O for most of the time then was transferred to a 46 Squadron stationed there. He was a good officer when he worked but I lost track of him after he transferred.

Sir,
A former 263 member ask me to post your message to all the members of HMM-263. I asked that if they had any info regarding your father that they please post it here on the NOTAM Board. One member did send me some info and I hope it helps.

Gary,
I was with 263 at Quantico from 1971 to 1973 and I remember Roy. I first met him when he was assigned to MCAS staff because one of my crew chiefs got into a bit of a dust-up with him. Things were worked out. Roy later joined the squadron while we were on a Med cruise from July 1972 to January 1973 but was not on the cruise. He later became the S-1 and held that position when I left active duty in June 1973. Roy was a good guy and took his job and flying seriously and professionally. He was easy to like. I do remember hearing about his death in Okinawa. As I recall it was a result of flying into some powerlines in the Northern Traning Area. It was sad because the war was over and Roy was liked and respected. A shame.
Hope this helps.
