I was in HMM-164 with John Astle in 1969 in RVN.

I think his nickname was Ace.

Col.John 'J.C.' "ACE" Astle USMCR Retired

served with HMM-164 in country, 1969,
with HMM-261 in 1970 with Carib 1-70,
served with presidential squadron before resigning.
flew medivac helos in Baltimore area,
flew helos for Baltimore City Police,

Was elected to Maryland Sate Senate from the 30th district, a position that he still holds.

I knew Lt Astle in 1969. I flew with him several times..YT-20 (Cpl R.D. Knowles).

I remember a rather interesting incident around Feb-Mar 69 when I cam out of Thon Duc and landed somewhere near Liberty Bridge and Lt Astle had shut down to check his aircraft...took some rounds and actually had his mike shot in two. No one injured that day.

I had written John some years ago when he was fliying for a hospital and was a Senator in DC...if my memory serves me right.

All who knew him would recognize the Ace of Spades that he passed out all over Vietnam....you have been served by the ACE...
