I am searching for the medevac crews, unit unknown, from Danang which came to a village named Bich Boc, just down the road from Hill 55 on the early morning of 18 February 1967. One chopper was a gunship and the other 2 were medevacs but only one landed to extract a USMC KIA, 2 USMC WIA to Danang NSA. There was also a US Army team there in the County Fair and sustained one wounded but went to Danang III MAFby ground transportation before going to NSA Hospital in Danang,

Medevac Crews

Roger,

You might want to try emailing Marion Sturkey (Popasmoke Mbr)

Judging from his Bonnie Sue missions, he kept meticulous HAC logs

Hill 55 Area Medevac

Roger -

This might help narrow it down for you. Do you recall what type of helicopter was involved in the medevac? If it was an H-34, do you recall any special markings on it? For example, my squadron was HMM-361 and was based out of Marble Mountain at the time and flew numerous medevacs in that area.

Our helos could be identified by a yellow and black tiger striping paint job on the transmission area just below the main rotor blades. We also had a circular picture of the Esso tiger on the tail of our helos. Other '34 squadrons also had unique markings, as did the '46s.

Hill 55, 18FEB67

I cannot say for 100% sure the 34 had Exxon Tiger on it, but there is something in my mind that I believe it was. I remember only a month earlier I was picked up by an Army Huey which had a full moon and a black cats (the 244th I believe). I thought what are the chances of anyone being picked up by two different branches, in 2 different type of craft, that both cats feline logos on them!

The crew may also remember the incident be of the unique situation.

The Marine unit came under ambush just as an Army deuce and a half came around the bend at Bich Boc, near Hill 55 which was headed for An Hoa. One of the Army guys, a corporal, me, was slightly wounded with superficial shrapnel wounds to both arms and hands.

However, he was not medevaced out as his wounds were treated by a Navy Corpsmen with the Marines. Only the Marine KIA's/WIA's were airlifted to NSA Danang Hospital but the crew did ask the Army corporal if he wanted to ride into Danang NSA. He was later driven to NSA Danang Hospital.

The crew may also remember the incident because of the Army corporal. First, there were no Army at or near Hill 55 at that time. Second, there were few Army corporals compared to the number for SP4's. Third, the Army corporal had both forearms and hands in bandages when speaking to the crew.

Maybe this additonal information may jog some memories.

I thank you for your assistance.

Semper Fi!

Roger
