Major Joseph M Loughran XO/H&S 3/26
I was with HMM-262 as an AE from March '68 thru October '68 and flew as a gunner in May. The remainder of my tour (till March '69) was with HMM-364.
I've been with the Defense Contract
Management Agency, DCMA since Jan '89. I'm presently assigned to the Sikorsky Aircraft Manufacturing Co. in Stratford CT. DoD civilian personnel have the same type ID cards as the military.
I had my ID updated at a Navy Marine Corps Reserve Center (NMCRC) in New Haven CT. The center is named after the major.
He was KIA on May 2, 1968 and died enroute to or at Dong Ha from Khe Sanh. After posting this information on the Khe Sanh website, I was informed that a lone UH-34 just happened to be in the area and got the radio call.
Your Order of Battle states that the following '34 Squadrons were in country at the time:
HMM-163, HMM-362, HMM-361, and HMM-363 was on the IWO JIMA.
Can you find out wihich squadron had the mission? I thought the pilots and crew would like being informed that Major Loughran was honored by having a Reserve Center named after him. Also, he was awarded the Legion of Merit posthumously.
