From the mailbag. Anyone having any info post up or contact Mike Castle
My name is Mike Castle and I served with 2/4 in Vietnam 1968 and 69.
April 9, 1969 LZ Stud/Vandergrift uper LZ had a CH53 crash. It started the ammo dump on fire resulting in a huge explosion that went on for it seem forever. I sat in a bunker right next to the tower taking direct hits from 105 and 155 rounds. We all took concussive wounds for hours. I have some pictures I have to locate after our move to Texas. I am looking for anyone who may have any picture or memory of this as it was an experience in Vietnam above all that I felt I would never survive. I have much more detail about this and even found the date in our daily logs from 2/4 Marines gold Company. The only thing left standing after the explosion was some communication wires from the tower that had disappeared. What we had was a black spot and ammo everywhere. I have a picture of a little red sign that says LZ Stud/Vandergift on it and before picture with all the activity and tower intact.I was a grunt so I don't feel I am able to join your group to ask for this information myself. I did meet some of your members in South Dakota Vietnam War memorial in September 15-66, 2006. After all these years I am most interested in meeting anyone who has any recall of this event.
Semper Fi,
Michael G Castle
