My name is Howard Dennis and I'm seeking information on an antique box I recently purchased. Doing online searches I found it relates to the groups your website serves. Here is what I posted on a Japanese speakers website:

Being a former Marine I couldn't resist this especially since I collect Japanese art. It's an art form of gold and silver inlay over a controlled rusted surface called Komai.  Has the name Mac on one end and Jeauue on the other. I'm told a unit flew this style helicopter out of Okinawa in the 1950's and 1960's. Other than that suggestion I have no idea when it was made. It has the Amita logo on the bottom. Do the characters under the names look like kanji?

Thanks for any help,

Howard Dennis

This item would have had to have been custom ordered so I assume the owner would have been stationed in Japan??

This is one response I got on that site:

Those Gothic 'u's are probably 'n's, so it would actually be Jeanne. Plus the Japanese underneath reinforces this with 'Jane'.

That’s the HMR 161 motto.

sparsons,

Thanks for your response and link. One question, I've seen HMR161 and HMM161 listed online. Are they the same unit or different?

They are the same unit.  The Corps started to distinguish the types of helicopters such as HMM (Helicopter Marine Medium) , HMH (Helicopter Marine Heavy), HML (Helicopter Marine Light) etc for what each squadron flew.

Skatz, Sparsons, and Dale-A-Riley,

Thanks for your help on this, I really appreciate it. Now if I could only find out who is listed on the box maybe I could nail down a time period of when this was custom ordered and where the unit was during that time.

If you scan the squadron history link, there is a photo of Col Keith McCutchon on page 5.  It’s a stretch, as there are probably many Mc… that were pilots with the squadron, but it’s a starting point.

Good luck!

Sparsons,

Thanks, I completely missed that! I was going with first name Mac last name  Jeauue or Jeanne. Now I'm thinking maybe nickname Mac wifes name Jeauue or Jeanne?
