Request received from the brother of a lost Marine:

Dear Brook Stevenson;

My name is Richard Belli, brother to First lieutenant Michael L. Belli. Michael was a member of the Marine Corp. and I believe a member of HMH-363. Michael was killed on February 18, 1975 while on a training mission. At the time of his death he was assigned to Marine Helicopter Training Squadron 301, he was a pilot. I believe he was with HMH-363 because of a HMH-363 patch on his Marine Corp. leather jacket, he also has a plaque from “Heavy Haulers, HMH-462”. My parents have passed and now I am in possession of his affects.

The reason I am writing this note is because I have been trying to research his military history for my son, I plan on passing all my brothers things to my son and his children. I am extremely proud of my brother and his accomplishments, our father was a bush pilot and taught us to fly before we could drive a car. Michael’s dream was to fly for the Marines. I see no mention on your web site listing my brothers name, perhaps because I am mistaken in his being a member of HMH-363

Sincerely,

Richard Belli

I have found the following info, but am at a dead end for more information to help.

I have no known members of 363 (HMM or HMH) at this time, listed in our Squadron database that is from that time frame. Any and all help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

I was a SSgt at the time and was a flightline section leaderI Checked into HMT-301 in Jan 1975. Lt Belli was going through the syllabus to be an instructor pilot with
HMT-301. He was flying with Captain Watson on February 18 1975, the day the midair accident occured. All aboard the CH-53A were Killed. The lead aircraft was piloted By then Captain Les Petty (LtCol USMC Retired), His aircraft was extensivly damaged and made a forced landing on a hill near the crash site.

K.D. has the "real deal" on more than one question here. Hope you and Rae Ann are enjoying retirement.
