Perhaps you can point me in the right direction. I have been searching for a former Marine aviator for many years. The Marine Helo (popasmoke) Assn. tried, but got nothing concrete. It has seems to me that there must be a list of aviators who were WIA or KIA in Vietnam? This would give me a starting point.
I have been searching for Dave (last name forgotten). We were patients in ICU and a room at Tripler AMC for two months; where we took care of one another (physical & morale). We both were going to surgery almost weekly, so there are some gaps in what I can recall, including his surname ... I faintly recall a humorous reference to his name putting him at the front of lists (so, probably early part of alphabet). We were simply "Stan" and "Dave"
Dave was a Lieutenant, with a short time in Vietnam. He was flying as copilot in a 34, and was wounded in September - bullet shattered left arm, broke collar bone, and lodged near his heart. He had lost much blood, and had to be extracted through the window, as Korean or ARVN troops assisted, standing on one another's shoulders. He was from New Jersey, father was a professional, was engaged to "Gloria". She was RC, and parents were not favorable to the wedding plans. Consequently, we spent much time discussing spiritual matters. One morning, as I was headed to surgery, he was transferred to Philly NH. I have in my possession 3 letters from him there. all signed "Dave". He even mentioned a LtCol Marine who was his roommate (who I have not been able to locate or connect with via HQ USMC. He was heading to some convalescent leave (Christmas '66), and I heard nothing more.

Chaplain, retired Navy Captain Stan Beach, 3d Bn/4th Marines

HMM-161 and HMM-363 Command Chronolgies

I have looked through both of these Command Chronolgies and have not found anything relating to an incident like that.... others will have to check the other squadrons that were in country at the time.

Perhaps I can narrow the field down a bit for you.

Injuries sustained by USMC crews and pax in H-34's in September 1966 are listed by unit.

HMM-263, 3 major, 9 minor
HMM-361, 1 minor
HMM-362, 1 minor
HMM-363, 2 major, 1 minor
HMM-364, 1 minor
HMM-365, 4 minor

I would hazard a guess, due to the injuries you described, that the wounds would be described as "Major". So perhaps he was in HMM-263 or 363. Perhaps a posting on those units boards might jog some meories.

Red Lion Found

Dave Allardyce has been found and doing well thanks to the efforts of Ben Brenneman and the initial request from Stan Beach. The two, Dave Allardyce and Stan Beach, have made contact after all these years.

OooRah!
