Attention Marines, I am looking for crew members on the above mentioned CH-46. I was the door gunner on the date shown. I caught a ride from my base at Phu Bai to get in some flight time. The day was routine until about 1600 hrs. We were returning to base when we received a message that we were needed for a medivac at Khe Sahn. At approximately 1620 hrs. we were on the ground at Khe Sanh picking up a wounded Marine. My bird was his by mortor fire and disabled. There were 8 on board as I recall including the four crew members. Things happened pretty fast. As I recall, two stretcher bearers and possibly a corpman had just come on board with the seriously wounded Marine. A round came through the blades near the left stubby wing and disabled the craft. Not to get into the long version, I was medivaced by another CH-46 just minutes after we were hit. I am trying to find not only my crew and possibly the other 3 or 4 Marines who were on my bird, but the brave crew of the 46 that saved my ass.

Best way to reach the crew would be to go to www.hmm-364.org and contact webmaster who can post your request on that site. The Purple Foxes are having a reunion in Mesquite, NV Sep 29-Oct 2, 2011. Some of the crew may be at that reunion. Let me know if you have any problems connecting.

According to the 364 After Action Reports for 8 March 1968, the crew of YK-16 was:
Pilot: Capt Wiegand
Co-pilot: Carson
Crew Chief: Cross
Gunner: James
Corpsman/Other: Savanach (Group HAMS 36)
Your crew hauled 7000 lbs of cargo, had 4 medevacs, and had 2.6 hrs flight time.

It looks like your rescue bird was YK-12. Their AAR shows 4 emergency plus 4 priority medevacs. The crew is listed as
Pilot: Birt, W.H.
Co-pilot: Smith, J.J.
Crew Chief: Barton
Gunner: MSgt Sample
Corpsman/Other: Cpl Gooch

The Command Chronology shows that YK-16 (BuNo 153995) had to go to rework for repairs.

These AARs and the Command Chronology are on the Texas Tech Virtual Vietnam Website and also the www.recordsofwar.com site.
