I'm trying to apply for a scholarship for my son and would like to find out if my dad was a member of the association.
His name was Arthur James Beach.
Here is a link to his page on this website. He is still listed as mia.

He was was a member of squadron HMM163
Thank you for any help you can provide me. My son Jake is a good student and a great athlete.

Re: How do I find out if my dad was a member.
Thank you sir. I checked the database also and did not see his name there.
Was it common for helicopter pilots to not be members?
Re: How do I find out if my dad was a member.
Michael,
The association was formed by Pilots and welcomes everyone. Your Dad, if he is still MIA, wouldn't have know about the association yet, as it wasn't around until well after Viet Nam was "abandoned". We would have welcomed him with open arms.
Re: How do I find out if my dad was a member.
Thank you for your response. After doing some reading I see that the organization was not really formed until around 1988.
We lost him in 1966.

I am just trying to help my son out in his quest for a college education. I know his grandfather would have approved.
thanks again, michael

Michael
Check here: https://www.popasmoke.com/scholarship.html
It appears that your son can apply for one of the scholarships.
Re: How do I find out if my dad was a member.
try the VHPA website, their database is extensive and includes non members, supposedly nearly all Vietnam helicopter pilots. Just google VHPA

What if he was not a Pilot. Everyone thinks we were aLL Pilots. Thats not the case. There should be a data base of all present and past members wether we were Pilots or not. Semper Fi, and READY-APP.
Re: How do I find out if my dad was a member.
Michael,
All KIAs and MIAs are considered members of Popasmoke. Therefore, by inference, you are the son of a member. Apply for the scholarship on behalf of Capt. Arthur James Beach, HMM-163, your son's grandfather.

Re: How do I find out if my dad was a member.
For scholarships--also try your local American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and Disabled American Veterans Organizations. Most Posts have a Scholarship program--

I believe it would mean a whole lot more to Michael if his son got a scholarship sponsered by his fathers helo bubba peers. Just MHO.

Re: How do I find out if my dad was a member.
Just curious, what are the requirements for a scholorship?
Re: How do I find out if my dad was a member.
Larry-- I agree the POP scholarship wouls mean more. My suggestion was to also check the other VET groups also. With cost of college, 4 scholarships is better than 1. The other three are usually a contest concerning an Americanism type project with awards of 1,000 to 10,000 dollars awarded.

As much as you are on the NOTAM Board I would have thought you might have checked out the rest of the site. The following info can be found on the home page of the website concerning scholarships.

Re: How do I find out if my dad was a member.
You guys are great!
The issue that I am dealing with is that I need a letter stating that my dad is a member of the association for the people who administer the scholarships.

If there is any way that I could get that in writing on association letterhead, that would take care of it. Or even a fax or an email...
The email would have to go to: jeanna.adams@mcsf.org
If you need a fax, please email me at mportman2006@comcast.net
Thanks Gents, you guys rock!
michael beach
ps I want to thank the members who have contacted me who actually knew my dad in-country.
Re: How do I find out if my dad was a member.
Letter will be in the mail tomorrow

I agree with you Larry. All of us would help our grandchildren, the brothers we couldn't bring home would have also, those kids are for us to help. Where do WE send our checks?
Re: How do I find out if my dad was a member.
To make a donation to the scholarship fund make a check out to Popasmoke and put for the Pless Scholarship fund on the memo line. Send it to:
USMC/Combat Helicopter Association
520 Gentlewood Square
Purcellville, VA 20132
Slick keeps a seperate account just for the scholarships. When we get that one fully funded then we will start on another.
Thanks

Re: How do I find out if my dad was a member.
Larry, I'm putting 100000 each in my Grand Children's college fund. Almost there. If they can't get a Bachelor's on 100 thou a piece, they don't need one. This August will complete it. Plus my Son will have theirs included in his 20 year Service. Just putting that back in case the Gov. renig's on it. Semper Fi, and READY-APP.
Re: How do I find out if my dad was a member.
