I was aboard the USS Okinawa in '75 and again '76 in HMH-462. Was with Troy Glass, Dave Reavis, Moots, Rat. Was at Futenma when the blades took the top off one of our '53's on the flight line. Moots was the CC and manually shut down both engines with the fuel selectors in the cabin.

Was Senior Sikorsky Rep There 1973-1987. Have photos of the Open air H53 in the photo section. Not sure anymore how to pull them up. SF PM

Was also there and in "the screw" in 76-77 when Mike Hedon and Maj Flynn lost the roof. Hardest thing to figure out was how to shut down the engines. C/C figured it out by starving them of fuel from the cabin access area .

The bigger problem that arose from that, was that put us below the MARES_FORSTAT minimum level for combat capable a/c available in 24/48 hours with direct parts support. We had one already on a ship to NI, one on it's way down the highway to the loading pier, two setting alongside the hangar already in their cocoons, the one that Mike & the Maj had decapitated, and one other that 1/Lt Gale crunched during a test hop. "Big Bird" wanted the report to read 90-100% available (out of 18) a task that my pencil could not do, hence forth, I became the O Clubs Mgr and probably the best job the crotch ever sent my way...
