Subject: Search for Next of Kin of Marines Killed in HMM 261 Crash March 1964

Ben,

I hope you are doing well. This is a long shot. I'm trying to help the widow of a Marine Helicopter pilot.

More than 50 years ago, while on I & I duty , 3rd Force Recon Company, USMCR, Mobile, Alabama, I was the Casualty Assistance Officer to the family of Captain William Winston Moore, Jr, who was tragically killed in a helicopter crash March 28, 1964, in the Philippines. Captain Moore was a pilot in HMM 261 but he was a passenger in the crash that killed him and six brother Marines from his squadron.

At the time of the crash HMM 261 had nearly completed a year Westpac tour . During that tour 261 participated in combat operations in in support of the Republic of Vietnam. Captain Moore was awarded a Gold Star in lieu of his 4th Air Medal for "...his courage and devotion to duty..." as a "... Helicopter Aircraft Commander..."

Captain Moore's wife, Mrs Betty D. Moore, has formally requested that the names of her husband and his six comrades be added to the Vietnam Wall in Washington, D.C. inasmuch as their deaths are related directly to their Vietnam combat tour. To help in this effort she wishes to contact the families of the six Marines killed with her husband. They are:

Captain Herbert B. East, Jr.

Captain Theodore A. Heister

1st Lt James C. Deutsch

1st Lt Clifford S. Miller

1st Lt Glen H. Oldham

Sgt Herbert L. Howard

Would you please circulate this effort to locate these families to all in your Marine Aviation circles? Mrs Moore would like to contact them. Her email address is

Thanks,

Bill
