I am helping Bob's sisters with a shadowbox for his medals, Bob was my aunt's nephew from Williston, ND. We have his records from the Marines, but they do not show a CAR ribbon, he received a Purple Heart/Gold Star. If anyone would know if he engaged in ground battle we would like to know. My brothers grew up with Bobby and my middle bro was with Alpha Btry 1/12 for a short time in Vietnam. I have 2 sons in the Marines, one is a Sgt with 3/9 and my youngest is a 2141 AAV repairman, we are proud of these young men. Thank you for this website and all you do. Semper Fidelis!

Robert Himler

Captain Robert Himler was a pilot with HMM-265 in vietnam. You might try contacting them through POPASMOKE webmaster Wally Beddoe.

This is the official write-up of the incident.

This is some info concerning the CAR and eligibility. NOTE: this is the only Navy/Marine personal decoration that has no associated medal.

Marion Sturkey wrote the book "Bonnie Sue" about HMM-265, you may want to google his site as well. This link is to the book site.

I was not attached to HMM-265, but with the UH-34D squadron HMM-161 during the same battles.

Best of luck in your endeavor.

Hmm-265 8/24/68

Perhaps I can be helpful. I landed next to the crash site after they went down. As I recall, we were working the same frag as wingmen. There was no notable fire in or out of the zone; yet, he went down enroute back to Marble.

I went through the same CAR issue for one of my wounded crewman after going down into a hot zone that remained in contact until dawn.

Best regards,

Roy Hagerty

Thanks for your reply, I did find some info on the crash from an army website that said Bob was hit from small arms fire coming out of Quizmaster Team Echo's position on a resupply mission. The site is www.flyarmy.org. I want to be as accurate as possible for Bob's family and don't want to miss anything. I suppose the Air Medal is used for the combat flights, I think the pilots and crew should get the CAR anyway. Take care, Mr Hagerty
