Sincerely searching for anyone who may have known my father, 1st LT James (Jim) Lawrence Rhodes, HML-367, Pilot, 691010 KIA.
I am his son, Aaron, 8 months old at the time of the incident, now the father my own son. It is for myself, for my son, and for generations to come, that we seek to preserve this hero's legacy.
My sincerest thanks for your assistance and your willingness to serve this great country...

Is this the same Rhodes? Lt. Perry Unruh wrote "John Rhodes" in the photo description but perhaps it's Jim and not John?

Hello...and sincerest thanks for your interest from our family...
It is our understanding that the gentleman in this picture is John E. Rhodes, now retired LtGen. John E. Rhodes.
In our searching, it does, however, appear that LtGen. John E. Rhodes and my father, 1st Lt. James L. Rhodes, served in the same unit, HML-367, MAG 36.
It is this unit that is listed in the above photo of LtGen. John E. Rhodes and Lt. Perry Unruh, it is also the unit listed with the incident photo 691010 taken by Lt. Perry Unruh,
(www.popasmoke.com/visions/image.php?source=2722) and is the unit listed on the Virtual Wall, 1st Lt James L. Rhodes (www.virtualwall.org/dr/RhodesJL01a.htm).
There is also a photo of HML-367 1969 which may include my father's likeness, distinguished by what appears in the photo to be a mustache, although further verification is needed.(www.scarface-usmc.org/images/ault2.jpg) Lt. Perry Unruh is also in this picture.
With great hope,
Aaron
(I would be amiss if I did not take this opprotunity to offer our heartfelt and deepest thanks to all of those who have submitted these pictures and to those who have compiled these websites.)

Side by side photos of Jim & John Rhodes
Here are the side by side photos as they appear in my HML-367 cruise book for Phu Bai 1968-69.
Your dad ( Jim) is on the left with John on the right.
I am proud to have known and crewed with them both. You may be very PROUD of your dad, he was one of the FINEST.

FYI
A little photo explanation may help here. I do remember that the cruise book officer was hunting down a few of us that he did not have photos of. I was part of the Night MEDEVAC chase crew and we had been out all night, and were still standing by at the flight line MEDEVAC shack. I refused to get up and your dad (Jim) did his duty by sitting up and having his photo taken, I believe this is the resulting photo... This is that " I have been flying ALL NIGHT, just let me get some sleep" look, we all had it at some point.
My cruise book photo was never taken nor was LCpl Hesson or Cpl Siler so the cruise book does not have their photos, unfortunate as they were both KIA with your dad.
I hope this helps explain the drooping eyes in the photo.

our question answered
Mr. Curtis,
Thank you for the explanation to what has been one of our biggest questions and concerns.
This picture happens to be the one that is published on the Virtual Wall, where we saw it first.
I am so glad to know the story behind it. As I now have been able to replace worry with some sense of humor.
Even before your perceptiveness at my wish for an explanation, I had wondered if there would be a way to place a picture with better likeness on the Virtual Wall.
I still must admit that I am in awe to be corresponding with you about my dad. This is such a blessing and another story to add to our family archives.
With continued gratitude,
Aaron

Aaron, my name is Rick Ault, the picture you have seen posted on this website, is mine. I have hesitated to respond to your inquiry, because I just wasn't real sure. Now, I am pretty sure that picture is your Dad.
You see, I have the original photograph in my possession and on the back of the photo all four pilots signed the picture. One thing is a given, the Rhodes in the picture is Scarface 32, because as each pilot signed his name, he also put his handle. Problem is the signature of Rhodes is easy to see and the first initial of a J is easy to make out, but there is something after the J that I cannot distinguish. Could your Dad have been a jr.
Do you have anything with his signature on it, because this signature is distinguished easily by the straight up and down lettering, almost a printed signature versus cursive. The R is not attached to the h.
The photo posted was, I am pretty sure my going away party, so it would have been taken in Jan '70, possibly as early as Christmas '69. The pilots pictured were frequent 'guests' in the enlisted hootches. These were some of the coolest pilots, because they usually brought the good booze. We were a pretty tight group and if that is you Dad, he was one of us.
If you want to compare signatures, or see the photo up close and personal, I will be happy to mail it to you.
