Ladies and Gentlemen:
My wifeβs condition is steadily worsening. Her level of care is increasing to the point where I can not devote the amount of time necessary to perform all the duties required to run the Association on a daily basis and to plan the upcoming reunion. I am also facing some personal medical issues of my own which need to be addressed in the very near future. Therefore, I must regretfully submit my resignation as President of the Association. My resignation will take effect on October 1, 2007.
I have been honored to serve in a leadership position in the Association since 1995, and have been humbled to be in the presence of such great men. I can not thank you all enough for your friendship, trust and support over the years.
Vice President Bruce Colbert will take over as interim President until the Board of Directors meeting in Washington D.C. to ensure a smooth transition. I will also be available to assist Bruce if needed in the day to day operation of the Association and planning the upcoming reunion.
Semper Fidelis,
John βJ.D.β Barber

J D,
That Pop A Smoke has prospered down through the years is largely due to your exceptional endeavors. No one has given more, and asked for less β or demonstrated a higher order of self sacrificing leadership in the face of adversity. You embody the true spirit of Semper Fidelis. It is an honor to have served under your command, and to be your friend
Respectfully,
Tom Hewes

JD:
I'd like to add my thanks to all the others. Much of the smooth operation of Poposmoke can be laid at your door.
It is true that the better you did your job, the less apparant was your role. As President Eisenhower once said "It is amazing what a man can accomplish if he doesn't care who gets the credit." For an organization as large as Popasmoke to exist with so little friction is a tribute to your organisation and management skills.
You are going to be a hard act to follow.
But you can be sure that you have many friends worldwide, who only need to be asked and I hope you will call on them if required.

Thank you John Barber
As an Associate Member of this Organization let me tell you something about your President that many of you don't know and probably will never know this man you know as the President of your group. John Barber is someone I know as a true hero in my eyes and let me tell you why. As some of you know I was engaged to Lantie Harris, the Ugly Angle who was killed in nam in the helicopter crash in 1968. I had records of what had happened to Lantie and absoltuely no idea of how to read them or understand them. John spent hours with me via the net helping me understand them, locating items and awards and encouraging me to go to Lantie's grave to say goodbye to him. John helped me with the closure of a wound when nobody else would. He spent countless hours of his own time answering questions that would have driven the sane insane and never once was rude or lost patience with me. He guided me and helped me over and over and over again. I was lucky to have met him in Texas to thank him once and for all and John you will always have a place in my heart for all you did for me and helping me say Goodbye to my Ugly Angel once and for all. So for all of you Popasmoke members, you are losing a good representative not only as a leader, but as a good man. He showed me the meaning of Semper Fi.
Thank you for everything.....
Once A President Always A President~!

J.D. Thanks for all you have done for Popasmoke. Your efforts have been "above and beyond" the normal call of duty to keep things going even though you had personal concerns that would have given you a reason to bow out long before this. I concur with all of the other comments made above. Our best to you and your wife. We can never thank you enough.
fill some shoes
wars come and wars go. there is always going to be a war somewhere. what never changes is the fact that when the man carring the flag goes down, someone picks it up and everyone rallies around the flag again. one hopes that will be the case in your passing the flag. we have all heard that when you believe that your are indispensible, you should insert your fist into a bucket of water. upon withdrawel, note the size hole that is left. this is one of those times when i can safely say, your hole will be there for all time. god bless and may health be yours. thanks. george
