I've noticed over the years John Hunt using this phrase in his postings.
I remember the days, in HMM-164, when I would stand by the jack handle ready to pump like crazy and dreading to hear those words "READY APP".
I think the APU was the most contrary part of a CH-46. When one went out of whack, it seemed like you could never get it fine tuned again.

Ready-APP

Piercy, that is what I use. I only had an APP not want to start one time. The line Chief tinkered with it a minute, and never had a problem again. Yes, I hated to stand by the handle, but I was able to re-pump the pressure even when the HAC let the pressure bleed down. I Always pumped it up to a start. Two pilots would always try to let it bleed down where I'd have to re-puimp it from no pressure, but they never did, as I have said I was able to pump it to start. I will continue to use the READY-APP when I close a post. A few I would Sir, but generally I wouldn't. Semper Fi, and READY-APP.

Percy,
It wasn't the Auxiliary Power Plant (APP or 'APE'.,as we called it) that was a great source of aggravation.,it was that dad-gummed hydraulic pump.
One of the two common failings of the '46..,was the hydraulics & the input seals to the aft transmission.
Since the hyd. system carried a pre-load..,any leakage would surface at it's weakest point.,which appeared to be the pump body or the oil cooler..,generally.,the former.
The wizened c/c monitored this system closely.,&.,at any signs of leakage.,or drop in static pressure.,would make a mad dash for the 'bubble chasers'.
It occurs to me.,that the number of strokes required on that pump handle.,was somewhere in the vicinity of 10 to the 9th power..,just to get the pressure up to a 'maybe'/fingers crossed..,status.

I hated the Hyd starters on the APP and the engines. We had the same APP and engines on the VH3A and both had electric starters. All the time I was on the VH3A I can only remember once that the APP didn't start. That time was the first time that JFK flew in the new AC ,They took him to WV for something but he had to come home in a 34 the starter was bad on the 3A.I can remember pumping like hell to get the APP started. Craze, It happened at least 8-10 times, and I did pump the App pressure back after it wound down to a no start, where the APP would start. My Gunner will contest to that. We extended together to fly together, and we did. He was there every time. I called him my 1st rag, which he didn't like, but had to, to keep him as a steady Gunner. I never counted the number of times the handle had to be pumped, but it happened. I know it would wear you almost out. I as Crew Chief, did what I had to do, and the pump was part of it. Semper Fi, and READY-APP.

Hyd starters

Walt wished the 46 had had them then. I understand they have electric motors on the APP to start them now, on the 46. Semper Fi, and READY-APP.

Ready app

Ace, I was also a CH-46 crew chief. That's what I was talking about when I started this debate.

Ready APP

John, the 46 Crew Chief of today doesn't know what he missed. They have all kinds of goodies on that thing today verses then, ''68,'69. Easy job now. Can't haul as much though. Semper Fi, and Ready-APP.
