Ermey was retired from the Corps as a SSgt and spent 33 years in grade until given an honarary promotion to GySgt by General Jones at San Diego a couple of years ago. He was cited for his many years of contributing to the USMC image and constantly educating the people of the United States about the Corps in his films and TV show.
I believe on one of his shows, he admitted to being an "Airdale". So he is one of us.
