Sometime in 1976 or so, I learned of the loss of some former HMM-264 pilots (7564's) at New River that were trying to scud-run the Appalacian Mountains out west near Snobird VOR (NC). Not unlike a similar accident in Korea some time later, the wingman followed the lead into the ridge line. I'm not sure of the fatalities or the circumstances, but I believe the pilots involved were: John Sitton, Gene Novak, Ken Smiley, and Larry Burrows. I'm quite sure Larry Burrows died from his injuries, but do not know what happened to the others. Any help on this?

Hooper, the pilots of the first aircraft were Larry burrows and a co-pilot whose name I can't recall. Ken Smiley and John Sitton were in the second aircraft. Burrows and his co-pilot were killed in the crash, but Ken and John survived. They both got out of the Marine Corps sometime later. Ken Smiley lives in Plano, TX, but I don't know where John Sitton is.
