Now Lay before the mast, all "Sea Lawyers" reports (please!).
I'm trying to cover a matter for my son who has just been sent into hazardous fire zone in SW Asia for second time within a year. As far as I know, he had about two weeks notice of movement after being on alert since his return from there in Oct '03.
He has left behind a car, which was in maintenance (CA) at the time, and an allotment to Progressive Insurance for his Insurance premiums. My plan is to rescue the car, register and use it in OK where I live and he will be applying for residency/university attendance upon completion of his first hitch.
Upon contacting Progressive to obtain the insurance document needed in OK to register the car, they told me they have cancelled his insurance for non-payment of premiums and have no qualms in doing so, allotment or not, regardless of his inconvenient military "problem."
Please jump in here and say something that will stop me from ripping my "marmaluke sword" from it's hallowed place on my office wall and go charging out to CA on a greyhound bus and start kicking some progressive ass! PLEASE!
Soldiers & Sailors Act
Back in WWII a thing called "The Soldiers & Sailors Act" was passed by Congress & still in affect. I recently read that it applies to the miliatry when on active duty regards debt collection & return to their previous employment when they return. Expect the VA office should be able to help you with that situation. Good Luck. SF PM

George T. Curtis (RIP. 9/17/2005)
Contact USAA, and get the car insured by them. I'm sure it will cost a lot less. About a year ago a guy rear ended me while I was stopped at a red light. The guy who hit me had Progressive insurance, and the problems I had getting them to fix my car were enough to almost make me want to go postal. Bottom line getting them to do the right thing took a lot more effort than it should have, and left me with a very bad attitude toward their company.
GEICO was very helpful with me when my son was in Iraq.
