Folks,

I've been using Google Earth lately in conjunction with any book I am
currently reading.

It really helps to get deeply involved in the story, when you can walk
the territory in the story.

Lately I've discovered that living conditions at Marble Mountain have
VASTLY improved since many of us were there over 40 years ago!

There is now a Crowne Plaza Resort sitting about where the hanger
area was east of the flight line.

If you can crank up GE, take a look around the old place.

The below pic has an image date of Feb 3, 2010.

Marble Mtn Today

That is very interesting. I was thinking of taking one of the tours that were being advertised at the reunion. I would love to bring a finalization to my experiences of Vietnam. I spent three tours in country. Two with 1st Maw and one with 9th MAB.

I will have to check GE out.
Thanks

Could it get any better?

Than it was I mean. I was never stationed at MMAF but I sure enjoyed pulling milk run every couple months from Quang Tri just to sit on porcelain:D

Porcelain!?!?!?!?!!!!!

We had wooden 6-holers!

Sometimes with the danger of slivers!

You can see two pissers, one on either side of the 6-holer facility.

At least, the cans aren't burning!:eek::eek::eek:

Marble Mtn today

Mike Marble has changed way so much even since '98 when my group was there. Our 30 year reunion for most. Went from Chu-lai, all the way to the DMZ, W/most all the zones, and Hanoi. Good trip then. Not sure now. Semper Fi, and READY-APP.

Travel to exotic lands and...

At the reunion I too contemplated a trip, the wife said I should do it with a bunch of guys instead of her. I have been enjoying the photos going up lately from some trips back. But then could I take that heat again, I vividly remember my first couple days in country when I didn't think I could stand it.
It would be worth a try though, if anyone is putting together a trip let me know.

Hey Mike, your pic brought back lots of memories. We sure were lucky to be in the very first hootch off the tarmac! Especially during incoming. Let's see how my memory is. Corner hootch for '463 with Amtower, Crapser, McCombs, Bollinger, and maybe Rains? and maybe Barcelon? How's your memory.....help me out here....

First hootch on corner, adjacent to tower.

That be right, Bob!

Bill Russell was another. Also John Perry.

In the attached pic are Jim and I standing (L/R) and Bill McCombs and John
(L/R) sitting.

Do you recall the stacked lawn chair incident during the rocket attack, late in
our stay at Marble? That was bizarre.

I've lost the pic I took of those chairs, and have yet to find the neg.

Six or eight years ago, I was on a biz trip to Philly and I spent the weekend
with Steve & Vicki Lieb. He told me that Jim and his wife stopped by on a
return trip from Canada earlier that year.

When we made Sgt, we moved to the second hootch from the corner. Still
not a bad location. I think the first row only got hit once, and that was the
4th or 5th hootch east of us toward the beach.

In 1970 and 71, we had rocket tubes half buried in the sand. You could find yourself passing time with hooch maids while passing water in the tubes.

Marble Mtn today --- another pic

Entrance to the Crowne Plaza Resort at Marble.

As said in my initial post on this thread, the MMAF level of accommodations
has been vastly improved.
