This quote is from today's New York Times in an article regarding the controversy over the military service record of Attorney General Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut.
I am not sure where the phrase "their war" comes from.
I recall a class at The Basic School where the instructor showed us how the Marines have been involved in an armed conflict in virtually every decade since 1775. Going forward, it is still true.
It seems like there is always tough work to be done if someone wants to sign up.

It's easy to say you wanted to 40+ years after the fact.
It's a phenomanal change in the attitudes of a signifcant part of the population. They go from degrading our service when we came home and decades afterwards. Now if they think it helps them politically they DECIDE to become one of us.
I guess Kerrey was at least smart enough to preplan it all (or someone was smart enough guide his path).
