Twentynine Palms, CA - California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has signed legislation by local Assemblyman Paul Cook declaring March 30, each year, as "Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day".
By affixing his signature on Cook's AB 717, California became the first state in the nation to establish an annual "Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day."

"Welcome Home," Schwarzenegger stated as he signed Cook's legislation at the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center in Twentynine Palms.
"Our Vietnam veterans fought for our freedoms, kept America safe and dedicated their lives to this nation," the governor stated during Friday's ceremony. The event was attended by numerous Vietnam veterans, actor Jon Voight (a long-time advocate for veterans issues) and a number of dignitaries, including Third District Supervisor Neil Derry.
"We are forever thankful for their unwavering strength and courage while fighting in the Vietnam War," the governor stated. He explained the signing of the bill helps express the state's gratitude and remembers the service of the Vietnam veterans in the state.
"This is a monumental step in the struggle to help Vietnam veterans heal some of the mental wounds that were inflicted when they returned home and found their country politically divided," Cook emphasized. "Although this honor is long overdue, I'm glad that I can still draw attention to the importance of remembering the sacrifices of these brave men and women."

The governor will hold the signing ceremony at the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center in Twentynine Palms at 10:30 a.m. with Cook, a former Marine and Vietnam veteran, at his side.
Cook described the Vietnam War as a highly political conflict. "It still evokes strong feelings among veterans and people who disagreed with the U.S. policies at the time, but it is important that we set aside these differences to honor and thank the men and women who put on a uniform to preserve the freedoms we have today," Cook noted.
A special pass is required to gain entry to the base. Assemblyman Cook's office can assist veterans and members of veterans organization obtain a pass. Call (916) 319-2065 for additional information.

Original Story
Sacramento, CA – Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has promised to sign legislation declaring March 30 each year as "Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day."
Assemblyman Paul Cook (R-Yucca Valley), author of the measure, appreciated the Legislature's approval of AB 717 following a tumultuous week under the Capitol dome.
Earlier in the week, an identical bill, AB 264, was vetoed by Governor Schwarzenegger after he vowed to strike down any measure that didn't address a variety of controversial policy issues.
However, after a meeting between Cook and Schwarzenegger, Cook rescued the measure by placing the language into AB 717.
Schwarzenegger stated he would sign the bill, if it passed the Legislature, at a ceremony with veterans groups present. Cook called the agreement a victory for Vietnam veterans everywhere.
"From day one, my intention was clear – establishing a 'Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day' to honor California's Vietnam veterans for their bravery and sacrifices on the battlefield in serving our country," Cook stated in a media advisory.
Cook emphasized, "This is a special day for Vietnam vets who have been ignored for decades throughout this country. This is a day to appreciate them and the sacrifices they made on behalf of this great nation. How fitting that on 9-11, Democrats and Republicans came together as Californians and Americans to honor our Vietnam veterans."
Pete Conaty, a Vietnam veteran and lobbyist for one the bill's sponsors, the California State Council, Vietnam Veterans of America, stated, "This bill will go in as a long overdue thank-you that America owes to its Vietnam veterans.

After the bill passed the Legislature, Cook praised the efforts of José Ramos, a Vietnam veteran who was the leading force behind a similar measure enacted in Congress.
"José has been, and will continue to be, a strong voice for veterans nationwide. His tireless efforts were integral to passing this legislation and giving California's Vietnam veterans the appreciation they are long overdue," added Cook.
Schwarzenegger issued the following statement regarding the bill: "Thousands of Californians answered our nation's call to serve during the Vietnam War. They served with honor and distinction, and many courageously gave their lives to protect the freedoms that we as Americans hold dear. Declaring a public day of remembrance with the 'Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day' is an important reminder for all Californians to reflect on the sacrifices and valiant contributions that California's great Vietnam veterans have made for us all."
March 30th~annually~!
{{{*ABOUT TIME*}}} When I left Danang in Oct of 69, I went to Okinawa, then in Mar of 70 I took a plane to Travis AFB, there I was told to wear civilian clothes.
There were hundreds of people outside the gate, in protest of the 'conflict'. I drove my car right passed them without a incident. BUT: With 4 Sons & a wife in the car, had a military decal on windshield & bumper stickers, headed to South Carolina, every stop we made, resturants, motels, etc: we were boo'd, spit upon & made to feel scared that we would loose our lives... Semper Fidelis~!

Can't speak for anyone
else, but let me apologize for them anyway.
I am 15 years younger than T, but I do remember that of the very few things he recounted to me about his experiences in country and after, one very vividly.
He disembarked in SF to a three piece brass band and a crowd spitting and booing at him. And they were supposed to be "hippies", the "flower" children.
I am ashamed for them, but I had the privilege of being the child of a WWII veteran, albeit one born a bit after his return, and I would have known better if I'd been of that generation. I do know that it was hard to be among the "hippies" if you actually had anything logical to interject into their thought processes...you'd be messing with their high.
I might disagree with the processes that result in sending people into war, but I could not ever dishonor those that do what they consider their honorable duty, ever. It would defy logic to do so and one would have to be very brain-washed and/or high to do it.
I am glad you made it home, for you and your family.

march 30th annually
I myself feel mr. 'I'll be back' can blow smoke in someone elses back pocket. I came home on extention leave for choppers, and almost was beat to death by college students, and spent my leave in serious recovery. I was GLAD to get back to Vietnam. They can lay their guilt trip on someone else, but not on me. After 43 years, for me; just a little too late. Semper Fi, Ready-App.
Back to the WORLD

march 30th annually
I failed to say in my 'march 30th annually' post that the college students were the 1st string of the schools football team. I got 4 of them pretty good, before they got me dang good. I looked like the looser of a Heavy Weight Fight, and felt it too. Guess I was.
Permit me a word
ALLOW all these people their long over due confrontations with a dark
period in American history.
They have their guilt to face with the way that we 'Nam vets & the Korean
War vets were treated on our return to the "World."
Perhaps it will serve to fortify our brotherhood's resolve that never again
will our returning boys be treated in such a manner.
NEVER AGAIN !!!
'Nuff said.
