Subject: Acclaimed War Memorial Comes To Connecticut

East Hartford
Acclaimed War Memorial Comes To Connecticut
Regional
Submitted by Tina Varona on 10-03-2008.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the Vietnam Traveling Wall. To honor this milestone and those who have sacrificed their lives for our country's freedom, a special 4-day event will take place from October 15-October 19, 2008, at Rentschler Field in East Hartford.

The Wall stands 8 feet tall, is 370 feet long, and bears the names of 58,260 men and women lost or killed during the Vietnam War. It is an 80% replica of the original monument installed in Washington, D.C.

On Wednesday, October 15, at 2:00 p.m., 612 motorcycle riders, most of them veterans, will escort the Wall Memorial to Rentschler Field. One biker will ride for each of the 612 names on the wall representing Connecticut servicemen killed or missing during the Vietnam War.

Beginning on Thursday, October 16, at 12:00 p.m., the wall will be available for viewing twenty-four hours a day through Monday, October 20, at 7:00 a.m.

On Thursday, October 16, at 7:00 p.m., the 4-day event will officially commence with an opening ceremony. The American Veterans Traveling Tribute (AVTT), members of the First District Vietnam Wall Committee and distinguished guests from all military branches will be on hand for this event.

The main event will take place Friday, October 17, at 7:30 p.m., featuring a special performance by the elite Marine Corps Battle Color Detachment including the U.S. Marine Color Guard, Silent Drill Team, and Drum & Bugle Corps.

The U.S. Marine Drum and Bugle Corps, known as "The Commandant's Own," offer a unique blend of contemporary songs and traditional marching in carefully choreographed drill movements.

The Silent Drill Platoon performs a precision drill that is unmatched. Without verbal commands, these Marines will dazzle the audience with their intricate drill routine and unparalleled precision, including articulate rifle spins and exchanges.

On Saturday, October 18, at 2:00 p.m., a Color Ceremony will feature colors from the branches of military services. At 7:00 p.m., a special candlelight vigil will be held to remember those who sacrificed their lives, to honor those who fought in wars past, and those who continue to serve our country today.

"This event is a moving and respectful tribute. The traveling memorial stands as a reminder of the great sacrifice of war. It was made for the purpose of helping to heal and rekindle friendships made during a difficult time. It is our way of saying 'thank you' to all the veterans who have served our country past and present, and to those who are currently serving in Iraq and Afghanistan," said Paul Barry, Chairman, First District Vietnam Wall Committee.

"It is also a chance for veterans and family members who have never seen the Vietnam Wall in Washington. We are honored to bring the Wall to them," added Craig Jordan, Co-Chair, First District Vietnam Wall Committee.

On Sunday, October 19 at 12:00 p.m., hundreds of motorcycle riders will gather for a final ride to the wall. At 5:00 p.m., a closing ceremony will take place featuring the Commissioner of the Department of Veterans' Affairs, Linda Schwartz.

For those in the area

There may not be many members of the Popasmoke Association in this area, but there are plenty of Marines.

As the Commandant for the Department of Connecticut Marine Corps League, I will be representing all of the Marines in this State. We are looking forward to the Wall coming and its ceremonies.
