I completed boot camp in Mar of 67 at PI. While I have some very vivid memories of boot camp I seem to have forgotten some things. I watched the "Marines" on PBS TV the other evening and I don't remember having a special ceremony where we would have been given our EGA's. I remember the gradulation ceremony and the side straddle hops ( in dress greens and spit shines shoes no the less ) we had to do on the way to the cermony because somebody did something. If there is anyone else out there from this era do you remember a special ceremony?
Boot Camp EGA Ceremony
Gerry I graduated in Nov 66 and we had no such ceremony. I probably was the proudest when our Drill Instructors addressed us as "Marine" and shook our hands as we got on the bus from PI
EGA Ceremony
This is a new ceremony within the last 10 or so years. You have not forgotten a thing! We didn't do the Crucible either, we did Elliott's Beach and other exercises. I like the ceremony. It "etches in stone" the first seconds of realization that you are finally a United States Marine!
EGA Ceremony
My daughter graduated from PI about 3 years ago (40 Years after I graduated). The EGA ceremony is conducted the day before the graduation ceremony and it is a very moving experience. There weren't many dry eyes on the parade field (including this old war horse). I, too, remember what a profound experience it was to hear my drill instructor call us Marines the very first time. In my case it was just as he was turning the lights out the night before our graduation. He hit the light switch and said, "Good Night, Marines."

Boot Camp EGA Ceremony
I was a DI at PI in 1964-65-66 and there was no such ceremony at that time. The first time recruits were called Marines was, as previously stated, the night before departing MCRD for ITR when the DI turned the lights off for their last night with a "Good Night Marines"!
I believe the new ceremony was instituted when Gen Krulak was Commandant, about the same time that the "Crucible" was introduced into the training regimen.

Thanx much for the responses. I have senior moments from time to time but I was pretty sure I did not forgot something as important as this.
Semper Fi, carry on Marines
