The 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit, including Battalion Landing Team 3rd Battalion, 1st Marines; Combat Logistics Battalion 13; and Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron 163, boarded the ships of the Bonhomme Richard Expeditionary Strike Group in Kuwait to begin its indirect trip back to San Diego.

The MEU will make port visits along the way before its scheduled return in November, according to a MEU press release. The MEU’s original return date was in October.

As part of the troop surge directed by President Bush, the MEU had patrolled the northern portion of Iraq’s Anbar province since May, becoming the first U.S. military presence in the desolate region near Lake Thar Thar, where it searched for weapons and insurgents.

The MEU deployed from San Diego on April 10.
