Apache Snow

The dates appear correct, 690510-, i flew numerous gun-run missions with VMO-6 and Medivacs with HMM-262 during 19 days.. i remember sleeping on the CH-46 with C-rats & Ammo, ready for night-time emergency extracs. Over ASHAU Valley, there were so many choppers i couldn't keep count... as we swooped onto the hilltop, i saw hand-to-hand combat 50' from the LZ.. too close to open fire! As we lifted off, one of the wounded Army soldiers (101st i think) asked for a cigerette.. i lit one for him, and passed the pack around. i remember his smile, as he handed me an AK-47 still in the wrapper, ... i told him i'd give it to the Pilot, who was getting us both out of there..
