I'm hoping someone can help me with this....
I was looking at my DD214 the other day, and in the "Ribbons" section it says that I was awarded the Vienam Sevice Medal with three stars. I was in RVN for an extended 19 month (13 + 6) tour in 68 & 69, but cannot rationalize how that qualifies for 3 stars.
Can anyone shed lite on this?
Thanks.

Re: Vietnam Service Medal w/3*
Each star is for a designated campaign, rather than a time period. The campaigns and dates are:
Vietnam Advisory Campaign 15 Mar 1962-7 Mar 1965
Vietnam Defense Campaign 8 Mar 1965-24 Dec 1965
Vietnam Counteroffensive 25 Dec 1965-30 June 1966
Vietnam Counteroffensive Phase II 1 Jul 1966-31 May 1967
Vietnam Counteroffensive Phase III 1 June 1967-29 Jan 1968
TET Counteroffensive 30 Jan 1968-1 Apr 1968
Vietnam Counteroffensive Phase IV 2 Apr 1968 -30 June 1968
Vietnam Counter Offensive Phase V 1 Jul 1968-1 Nov 1968
Vietnam Counter Offensive Phase VI 2 Nov 1968-22 Feb 1969
TET '69 Counteroffensive 23 Feb 1969-8 June 1969
Vietnam Summer-Fall 1969 9 June 1969-31 Oct 1969
Vietnam Winter-Spring 1970 1 Nov 1969-30 Apr 1970
Sanctuary Counteroffensive 1 May 1970-30 June 1970
Vietnam Counter Offensive Phase VII 1 Jul 1970-30 Jun 1971
Consolidation I 1 Jul 1971-30 Nov 1971
Consolidation II 1 Dec 1971-29 Mar 1972
Vietnam Cease-fire Campaign 30 Mar 1972-28 Jan 1973
Operation FREQUENT WIND 29 Apr 1975-30 Apr 1975
Re: Vietnam Service Medal w/3*
Vietnam Counteroffensive Phase III 1 June 1967-29 Jan 1968
TET Counteroffensive 30 Jan 1968-1 Apr 1968

Vietnam Counter Offensive Phase V 1 Jul 1968-1 Nov 1968
Vietnam Counter Offensive Phase VI 2 Nov 1968-22 Feb 1969
Then based on this, I should have 5 stars??? I was there from October 1967 to November 1968....
Re: Vietnam Service Medal w/3*
I was in country from Aug.'66 until Nov.'67. At that time.,all personnel drawing EXTRA hazardous duty were SUPPOSED TO.,undergo psychological evaluation on a 6 mo. basis.
Thus all combat aircrew served 6 mo.tours w/two being the norm.,or so I was given to understand. I only had one scheduled visit to the 'shrink' during that 15 mo. period. Yet my "214" shows device w/1 star.
Go figure.
I think military policy changed every 'happy-hour' at the "O" club.

Re: Vietnam Service Medal w/3*
5 bronze stars equal 1 silver star.

So according to this schedule of campaigns, I was there for six campaigns.
WTF! Who can figure the goverment logic.

Re: Vietnam Service Medal w/3*
You should wear 1 silver star and 1 bronze star on your Vietnam Service Medal.
