I stumbled onto your site here and started waxing nostalgic. It’s a funny thing about the so called good old days; as we get older we seem to forget the bad parts of those days and remember only the good. One thing is for sure; I popped a hell of a lot of smokes, red and green and I talked a lot of Marine helicopters into black LZ’s that were sometimes full of green and red tracers by their port and starboard lights and their exhaust flames and I carried a lot of wounded Marines out to those choppers while the gooks took shots at all of us. I was a radio operator on a helicopter support team (HST), the guys with the red patches, who were attached to various grunt units. I was based out of the Shore Party unit in Dong Ha from Oct. 66 to Nov 67. I was in Operations Prairie, Hickory, Cimarron, Buffalo, the LZ on top of the Rockpile, Con Thien, Cam Lo, the Razorback, Mutters Ridge and others. I’ve looked around quite a bit and I can’t find a lot of historical information about our teams and it upsets me a little. In the past times of severe criticism and condemnation of our actions in Vietnam I have always been sustained by my belief that we saved a lot of lives, a lot of pilots, air crews didn’t fly into trees because we gave them good directions and a lot of wounded Marines are alive because of the job we did. I'm not looking for any after the fact medals or anything like that but I would be nice to see our deeds acknowledged and your members are the most likely source because you were the ...........some call sign 2-1 this is Mutter or Payable or whatever HST...over... that we spoke to on those days and nights. You were also the ones who would call me over to your aircraft and hand me a sandbag that had my mail and sometimes a couple of cold beers and a some real food. So please let me know if you remember any thing of those days.
