Most Marines went through staging at Camp Pendleton. I was one of the few who went through staging at 29 Palms (Apr-Jun, 1970). If memory serves me, we were called "1st Marine Expeditionary Force". I remember being 20 yr old and unable to buy a drink. I also remember "trashing" the barracks 🙁 the night before we left. I remember playing war games in the desert didn't make sense to me either. Anyway, anyone else every go though 29 Palms for staging?
29 stumps
I was a Pendleton Staging guy, as were most of us. Can't imagine "trashing" Marine barracks without paying a dear price the next morning, though!! The staging 1st shirt must've been still in town!
We split for Tijuana and got robbed at knifepoint..(Don't ride in the taxi's). Great advice but a day too late for a couple of us! Maybe you were better off in 29 Palms, w/o booze!!
29 Palms Staging
I went through staging at Pendleton in July of 1970. The last of 3 wingers to go through staging I think. I never left the base. I gave up my liberty to some guys from the area.
Trash a Barrcks?
I never suffered with doing time at the "stumps"; I went through staging a Camp Pen. in Jan 66. But I'm like Joe, I can't envision anyone getting away with "trashing" a barracks on any active duty Marine base.
Staging liberty
John,
We didn't get liberty until the end of staging. That last week end was to have been great, and it started out that way....ended up crummy...Departed Edwards AFB the following Monday for Da Nang, via Hawaii.
Staging
Sept 68 we were scheduled for an 0800 flight out of El Toro. My mother, girlfriend and her mother were there to see us off. The flight was changed to 0700 so when all the families showed up, we were gone.
