Any of you ever hear of this movie? I saw it this a.m. (early). Battle Taxi, Made in 1955, stars Sterling Hayden and Arthur Franz, it is about the Air Force Air Rescue service during the Korean war. Flying the H04S and H-19s they were always low and slow. Once during a rescue where there was insufficient fuel aboard, the pilot landed and had the Crew Chief siphon gas from a disabled truck for his H-19. but he saved the downed pilot!! No weapons of any kind on any of the helos, they depended on F-86s, etc for close air support, etc. I guess it was the only movie specific to only helicopter rescue that I recall seeing. Seen some in other movies for sure, but ths was the subject matter of the entire flick! It was on TMC channel (Turner Movie Classics), fyi.:D

Joe, I caught it when it 1st came out. I was young, but it planted the Choppers in me then. My Father bought the 1st TV from Hudsons Big Country store in Coalgate Ok., in 1952-53. They had to drive 40 miles on a dirt road to service it. Of course everyone came to watch it most all the time. It was an RCA. Semper Fi, and READY-APP.
First TV
I remember going to my neighbors to watch Howdy Doody and Mousketeer Club since we didn't get a TV until about 1955. Only had one channel for about three years, then the other networks came to lil' ol' Shreveport...Then I could watch Lone Ranger and Roy Rogers and Gene Autry ALL the time on Saturday morning matinee. Better not forget "Lash" LaRue with the whip!!
Was a crew cheif in HMR 161 in Korea 53-54. The only weapons we carried was either a 45 or 38 depending on your rank. I was a cpl then and carried a 38. The HRS used AVGAS and it was a low octane. Can,t remember what it was. Its been a long time ago
Avgas .........
Jack,
I believe avgas was 115/145 ..... colored purple and pretty potent stuff.
When I was at NAS Dallas, there was a buddy of mine who would put a
bit of that in his hopped up '40 Ford. He was fine when he mixed in a
little of it, but one day he filled his tank and promptly burned the valves.
Ran like a spotted ape for a bit tho .... :D:D:D:D:D
There was 3 grades of Avgas 91/96 that was the fuel we used in SNB5's R985 engine 115/145 we used in the R4D8's 1820's the H34 all so had 1820's and used 115/145 the Airforce used 100/130 mostly. all this fuel had lead, the higher the octane the more lead.If you puy your hand in some 115/145 they would come out white from the lead.SF
ALways Good !!Checking

Battle Taxi
JJ, think it was '51 when we got the 1st tv sold at the Hudsons Big Country Store, in Coalgate, Ok. The only programs were from the station itself for some time. We did get the Grand ole Opry after awhile though. Semper Fi, and READY-APP.
Youngsters like Howdy??
Wow JJ, I wouldn't have thought they even knew who that was.....Interesting stuff....
youngsters like Howdy
Joe, every day there are more and more gone that knew what the Howdy Duty program was. Its a shame. Hope we start taking more and better care of ourselves. I stopped even using beer 8-9 years ago. They say beer, and alcohol is more harmful to us than cocaine, and several other drugs are. I will laugh at the va if I live over the 2015 date. Semper Fi, and READY-APP.
Sterling Hayden
served in the OSS in WWII as as pvt,2nd lt,1stlt,and Capt. USMC awarded silver star and army arrowhead device for Gallentry behind enemy line using Psudoname AKA John Hamilton .HE walked the walk !

Oss
The OSS guys didn't fool around for sure. WEB Griffin wrote a few novels about them and all are fiction, albeit fact based, and very interesting reading!!!
Oss
Joe, I've only read Books from Squadron members of the 'Nam for some time, but there was several movies about Korea that had Choppers in them. They were just able to carry the evacs, and didn't have guns. Ole Mickey Roonie had a good one as Pilot. Semper Fi, and READY-APP.
