From Michael Hoskins charliebattery67@wavecable.com
Hello Brook:
My name is Michael Hoskins; I am the webmaster, founder, all of the info that means a "whole lot of nothing" of the United States Marine Corps Artillery Association (USMCAA). I am also writing a manuscript, which is nearing completion; it covers my artillery battery's stay at Gio Linh from the initiation of "Operation Highrise" through the first NVA artillery attacks of the war and the events that followed shortly after before my unit displaced to Dong Ha in late April of 1967.
We were badly injured the night of 27 April 1967, into the morning of the 28th. As I mentioned, the fist artillery encounters of the war between NVA and Marine artillery were during this time period. FSB Gio Linh, under the command of then Lieutenant Colonel Bill Rice also ran the operation to retrieve two HM 34's, downed in the heart of the DMZ just after the 20 March artillery attack (the first of the war) by North Vietnamese forces.
I am looking for any pilots who flew medivac missions in and out of Gio Linh between 26 February 1967 and 28 April 1967. I want to add their personal recollections and photos (if available) to my book. I have some assistance arranged when the time comes to publish; I have contacts in the MC Museum at Quantico that I hope will help.
Please advise me if I have the correct squadron or where to go to find the right unit. Do you think an "interview" or two would be possible about the medivac missions. I was one of the Marines medivaced 27 April so this is personal to me. I feel the guys who did the flying up there deserve all the credit I can give them and the public needs to know about the dangers of flying those types of missions.
The link to my sight is below; it has grown. We hope someday to bring the representation to Marine artillery your site and Popasmoke has brought to the Marines who were flying.
Semper Fi,
Michael (aka Mike, Red, Mikie, it's your choice:>)
