I just hooked up with Jim Wengert who was in the hydraulics shop with me in 68 HMM-162, then went to HMM-262 in Nam 70-71. I hooked up with him on facebook and will go to the VFW in Mount Holly, NJ to see him for the first time in 42 years. Jim used to make the swoops with us from New River to NJ on weekends.

Guadalcanal was LPH 7, but is now it is razor blades. I saw it a few years ago in the Philly Navy Yard stripped down and ready to be scrapped.

Cruises

JJ,
I went on two cruises with HMM-261. Carib 3-68 and Carib 1-70. The first cruise was on the USS Boxer, LPH-4 which was a converted WWII Essex class aircraft carrier. No A/C, no lockers for valuables no nothing! When we went aboard the Guadalcanal on the second cruise we thought we died and went to heaven!

Triping AWAY

Hey guys I do believe I had a good trip with the Guam and Guadalcanal . I did see and even landed on the Boxer in late 67,that's when 264 was covering for 365 because the 46'es had been DOWN for the aft-pylon. 264 still had the 34s
and we took 6 or 8 on the Guam for 3 months or so. we also hit one of the biggest Storms I ever had happen in my life. That one night was a night never to be forgotten in my life. of course that's a story in its self and there's not enough room here to do it justice. Later ::o:p

hello

I was station on LPH 9 USS Guam with HMM 365 on a Carribean Cruise and then HMM 161 in Phu Bia. I was in Avionics and worked closely with all the other shops and crew chiefs. It is hard to believe I returned home 40 in December this year. It would be nice to hear from any one that flew the dame ground that I did.

tripping away

JJ, I too was on the Iwo-Jima, and went through a cyclone that the water was splashing on the walk way to the Crew quarters. We were as far up front as we could get. Had one heavy, the one I've mentioning, trying to land on the tripolie(sp), and kept trying to tell him, 'uh sir, were landing on the wrong boat'. Repeated that 4 times, then just before landing, he got out of pattern, and landed on our Iwo-Jima. Very hard head. Semper Fi, and READY-APP

If anyone had told us that our Vietnam service, those many years ago, would still affect us these many years later, we probably would have told them that they were crazy! In those those Days so long ago, we fought to stay alive physically, to win, to keep the faith with our other Marine brothers. In these latter days, we, you and I, all of us who served there, have waged and still wage a harder battle to stay alive mentally. Semper Fidelis:)

I agree Bunnie. We have a very good battle ahead of us. A great battle that gets bigger every day. There are Vets out there that are having it very rough to live because the problems they still have from fighting the physical War, keeps a number of us from getting, and keeping a job once we find one. With 8 million people out of work it just makes it harder for many of us that fought the Vietnam War, and most every War since then to get what jobs there are. The va has a system that we are having problems with getting a compensation thats almost enough to live on with a Family. It took me 19 years to get a compensation where I could live on it. I, as others had to go from one small paying job just to get by. Congress can give themselves a pay raise every year, but we the Vet haven't gotten a penny more in this year'10, and several more years to come. I believe until Congress removes the restrictions placed on we Vets, we will still be fighting for a compensation to live on for some time to come. Call the Senators, and now after January a Republican House, and tell them we should come close to the top in getting help. I believe each true Veteran that is having problems with their physical injuries, and our Post tramatic Stress Disorder Problems should be helped before the Country helps anyone else in this world. If it was not for us, we may not have a Country now. Until they realize that, we are in trouble. We must help our selves, and Brothers, as not many are wanting to help us. I Salute each and every one that I call my Marine Brother. Semper Fi, and READY-APP.

Bunnie ! I could not of said it better. Still we can and should remember that we are not alone. For many years most of us thought we was All alone. Now since the C/P's has help us find others and see that we still are a unit. Stay togather and we can continue on. God Bless you ALL

keeping strong

I agree with Bunnie, or I would not have written what I did. Yes we need to find everyone we can, and stay together, but if we don't help each other to get what we all are entitled to, what good is getting together? I would imagine C/P is meant to be computers. Been wrong before, and I will be wrong again. If we don't help each other with the Congress, and the va, we may as well just lay down and give it up. They will ignore us if we show them we are not together. If I have money coming, I want it. If my Vet Friend has a way to get Service Connection, I want to help him get it. If their widows needs help in understanding they can recieve widows pensions, I want to help her get it, we have to show them the way. Getting together costs money, at least 2000, to 2500 plus a year to get together, and have reunions. Not all are independantly wealthy, or draw a big military retirement check where we can get up, and go to popasmoke one year, and our Squadron Reunion the next. Our only chance is Congress. Am I mis-understanding something here? Semper Fi, and READY-APP.

Dale, I agree we need to stay comunicated as much as we can. I stayed alone for a very long time, until I found out about a Squadron Reunion. There are still many others out there the same way. Then PAS came along. Glad it happened. Semper Fi, and READY-APP.
