Whereabouts in the Airframe was the APU fitted?
Many Thanks, PJ
Hi,
To answer your question concerning the location of the APU.
The APU was located at the aft end of the cabin. It was on the left side as viewed from the tail forward.

In the rear of main cabin, port side, back next to the bulkhead.
H-34 APU?
I was just a pilot (not a crew chief) but, I don't think the 34's that we flew in 'Nam had APUs. It wasn't until I transitioned to 46's that I even knew what an APU was...
Now, that doesn't mean that the later 34 conversions with turbine engines didn't have APUs; I'm sure they did. Just don't know where the APU went. Sure wasn't much room, that's for sure.
Anyone else got any ideas?
H-34 APU
The APU sits on the deck just forward of the bulkhead separating the aft radio compartment from the main cabin. It's just behind the gunner on the port side. A two stroke Homelite chain saw motor driving a motor/generator. Push the button and the generator becomes an electric motor to get the two stroke running. Release the button and the electric motor becomes a generator. Helped the battery so the round engine was easier to start. Actually, some of those round engines wouldn't start without a little help.
The APUs were in the 34s is '65 and '66 but we normally carried only 600# of fuel because you couldn't carry much else with full fuel. We would sometimes remove the APU when we had an external power source and needed the extra lift capacity.
Uh-34 Apu
Many thanks for the info Gents.
Could anyone point me to a picture of the APU installation? Thanks!
PS. I hope the Reunion went well for all!
Is this it? (With acknowledgement to Smokstak.)
Can anyone please confirm? Many thanks,
