I am searching for information on the Marine Helicopter Squadron that was in Vietnam in 1965 and made the cover of life magazine. The tail number of the H-34 was designated YP-13, etc. The commander of the aircraft was Capt. Jerry Kettering. Crew chief was Sgt. "Rocky" Gardner, door gunner was Corporal "Skip" Miller. Any information you may have on this group would be greatly appreciated. They were shot down in 1965 and we all convalesced in the Naval Hospital in San Diego, CA, ward 3-c except for Jerry Kettering who was in Officers Country. Jerry Kettering is now deceased. I know his friend and best man. Could you help me find the other two? The last I heard from Rocky Gardner was that he was a Gunny at MCAS Santa Ana circa 1974. Thanks for the help, Doc

YP-13

YP call was the and is still the call sign for HMM-163, "Evil Eyes", Ridge Runners, or whatever they are these days. Great outfit I had the pleasure of serving in 1969 and 1970.

Rocky Gardner

I served with Rocky in HMM-163 in 1965. Haven't seen him since he was WIA on March 31, 1965. Try his email: randng56@msn.com.
