Anyone happen to know why the 2nd Battalion, 1st Marines are called "The Professionals"? Couldn't find anything in a quick search.
I don't ...but remember 2/1 had outer security for MMAF. I believe they left early '71 .....I remember this because after they pulled out, we got hit with a rocket attack.
From their website
From the Vietnam Veterans of 2nd Battalion 1st Marines:
"We call ourselves "The Professionals". This was not because war was our chosen career or that we liked the killing and destruction. It was just one period in all of our lives when we answered the call to duty. And we performed that duty with a style and grace synonymous with true professionalism."
Hope that is what you are looking for.

I'm looking at the patch of the 26th Marines. They have a banner on the bottom with the motto: THE PROFESSIONALS
The professionals....
charlie8137, I believe that was a standard send off for each Fixed Wing, and I'm sure Chopper Squadrons when they pulled out of where ever they were.(Rocket Attacks). In mid '68 when we, VMF(AW)235,'The Death Angles', the Last active Combat F-8 Crusader Squadron in the Marine Corps, (we had to transfer all of our Aircraft to the Navy on their Carriers at Sea), at Danang Air Base, we were the last Squadron on the Marine side at the North end of the runway. I got the license for the all terrain Fork lift that morning, and loaded all the Squadron equipment in the most northeast revetment we had, under Rocket attack most all that afternoon. They wasted a number of them on me. I was the last man of the Squadron out, as I caught a C-130 on its way to Iwakuni Japan. The Squadron was already there, and the rest of the 235 activity is classified. But, that was the standard send off for everyone that arrived in Country, or left it. The gooks knew when a unit was coming, or going, and welcomed them, or sent them off. Semper Fi, and READY-APP.
