I'm restoring an M725 Kaiser-Jeep ambulance like the ones we had at MAG 16 starting in 1969. They replaced the old forward control, "Cerlist" trucks. If anyone has pictures of these vehicles so I can copy the "Tac-Marks" I would be grateful. Also, if anyone has information regarding the reason Wing vehicles were painted with "US Navy" instead of USMC, I'd appreciate that data also. Any information about our vehicle markings would be helpful.

Thanks in advance. Bill Dial (former HM1 "Doc" Dial, MAG16 '68-'69) msms@goeaston.net or bdial@aol.com

Navy vehicles

The reason is that they were Medical Corps vehicles owned by the Navy. You know that the Marine Corps medical needs have always been looked after, quite capably by the Navy, including ambulances, etc., don't you? Well anyway, that's why.

USMC Medical Equipment

Joe,

Actually, the medical vehicles were USMC owned (I was a corpsman, MAG 16, '68 and '69). In the early 60's even the Wing "six-by's" had U.S. Navy painted on them. I never found out why. In RVN all our vehicles were USMC. Medical Department trains and supplies personnel to the USMC for medical activities: all USMC medical equipment...except, perhaps, special project equipment...belongs to the USMC. Navy medicine does consult on requirements etc. but the USMC buys it.

Regards, Bill

Marine owned/Navy numbers?

Doc,
You were there and I won't substitute my knowledge for yours. However, the Marine Corps has always been pretty stingy with it's equipment regarding ownership. That's not to say the Navy couldn't use whatever it needed, but I cant imagine using Navy numbers and I.D. on any Marine property even as small as a desk, let alone a vehicle! I did have some experience doing inventory with Navy/Marine assets in NAS Memphis while waiting for my aviation schools training to start and I can assure you that neither gives anything away! LOL!

Vehicle Markings

Hello All
I can partially explain the US Navy on Marine Vehicles. I was originally trained as an Aviation Supply Man. Prior to ADR and Non Dest Tester. In school were were told that due to the different pots of money; ie..Green (USMC) & Blue (USN) the vehicles had to be marked for the proper funds.
Thus almost all vehicles and GSE equipment had a USN Number and the Marking US Navy. The bumper markings that were unique shaped, such as the red apple for a Vmo squadron. The vehicles and equipment used by our USMC Ground Forces mon came from the green pot. Thus their vehicles and equipment were
funded from Marine Corps operating and Maintenance funds. The Marine Corps owned both sets of vehicles. Basicaly it was to make it easier to account for equipment.
Hope this helps

Marine/Navy numbers

My point exactly, John. Marines don't put Navy numbers on their vehicles do they? The Navy vehicles would have Navy numbers, etc.....The Marine green trucks would have Marine numbers, etc.... At least that's what we were told by the supply Chief in Memphis when we did the inventory of equipment, over on the operating side of NAS Memphis. Made sense at the time.
