POP A SMOKE is looking into purchasing a scanner to do 35mm slides.
Does anyone have a scanner that they scan slides with that works well?
.
Please do not give answers regarding photos, we have that down pat.
A number of us are in possession of scanners that propose to scan slides that do not give good enough quality product to post on our website, so if you have a 35 mm slide that is trouble free, please SOUND OFF

Used to work in graphic arts and we had a flat bed scanner that you could mount 12 slides in at a time...it did great work! Will get in touch with the owner and get spec's for you!
35 mm Scanner
George:
I have a Nikon Cool Scan 4000 ED which scans 35 mm negatives and slides which has been very satisfactory. It takes anout 5 minutes per frame but it can scan a slide at 4000ppi which is massive overkill. I used it to scan the slides that Bob Houston sent to me that I have been posting to the site.
I had a Polaroid Scanner which is in my garage if anyone wants it; it would make a good boat anchor.

Slide scanner
George,
All of the pictures that I have posted are 35MM slides and I use a Pacific Image scanner that costs about $130.00. It uses a USB and windows xp has no problems with it. It will also do either black and white negatives or color negatives in 35MM strips. It is not automated like the NIKon which costs around $2K. I am including a url if you want to check on it.

Slide Scanner
George:
My Nikon 4000 scanner, new about 2 years ago, cost close to $2,000.
But I looked on eBay and Nikon LS 1000 scanners ( pretty much the same as mine but scanning at 2700 ppi, more than adequate) were going for Approx $500. But there were many others, HP, Canon etc. that were going exceedingly cheap, cheap enough to risk it. Don't buy a Polaroid even if the seller offers you money to take it off his hands.
People are unloading their film equipment and going to digital so prices are low and now is the time to buy. If you buy eBay and I've had no trouble with buying there, make sure you get the manuals and all the cables.

George,
I'm using a Pacific Image PF 1800AFL. Got it on e-bay for under $200. Seems to work fine but the tech suport from the company sucks. It can do single slides and 35mm strips. Scans up to 1800 dpi.

re: Slide Scanning
I know what CURT is looking for but no one has told him how many slides it will do at once..... his problem (Popasmoke's) is that people send in boxes of slides at a time or bring them to the Reunions and it is really time consuming to do them one or two at a time......... does anyone have one or used one at work that will do more than a couple of slides at a time.....?????
He knows that I have built a slide adapter that can do 20 at a time..... I can adjust the light for really dark slides so that they are not totally lost..... the problem is it is home made jury rigged and not real handy to lug around.... but it works....
I know that someone out there knows of one that can give us all a Manufacturer, Model Number, etc. AND the number of slides it can do at a time......
Just think how long it takes to do a box of slides one at a time just to scan them in and not play with adjustments and cropping... then multiply that by a few more boxes.....
:p
Thanks Brook
I should have clarified the requirement to do large volumes of slides at once, preferably at least 12 on a sheet, 20 would be awesome.
Your jury rigged one would be great for my home base, but troublesome to travel with and set up at reunions.
Once again, thanks for clarifying our need.
Everyone that has given information has been very informative and these posts are helpful to others that read them that may want one for just their own slides. Many Nam vets have hundreds of slides.
