In July this year, my airframe will have reached max allowable hours, all extentions/waivers null and void. I know there are many folks that chose the same career pattern as I (USMC active duty then USAR/NG as a reservist) and would like to know how they faired on their transfer to "Davis Montham."

Most specifically, the request for retired pay asks for "highest rank held" which is in direct conflict with the highest pay grade held...considerably when it comes to the formula for retired pay.

Can one retire at the highest rank held but recieve the highest pay grade entitements? Pls advise.

Dear Tom:

You can retire at the highest rank held but will be paid at your highest pay grade.

As an LDO you might have attained the rank of Captain/03 and reverted to your permenant Enlisted rank of Gunnery Sergeant and finally retired from the IRR as an E-9 Sergeant Major or Air Force equivilant. You have the option, when retired of either wearing your enlisted or officers rank at appropriate military/civilian functions. When it comes to the Navy Federal Credit Union, I think I would want my monthly deposit to reflect my highest pay grade (E-9) vs. my highest rank.

Your local VFW or the nearest Navy/Marine Corps MWR Office has all the details for soon to be retirees. I hope to stop by in September of this year. The checks actually start the month after your 60th birthday (along with 100% health-care and pharmacy).

Sorry guys, but it really was worth all those weekends with the boys "Drilling for Dollars" (and escaping the wife and kids!).

Best regards,

Jim

I got out of the Corps as a Capt. in 1980, and retired from the Army Reserve as a CW4 in 2002 (my 60th birthday) a CW4 gets more money than an O-3. Got my last reserve check in Sept. 2002, and my first retirement check on 1 Oct. 2002. Hope it goes as smoothly for you. Living in St. Louis area where the office for the Army Reserve is located meant that I could go there, and deal with the folks face to face, so all the forms were filled out correctly, and checked before they were sent to KY, cut through a lot of red tape. Since then the money has been put in my checking account 1st day of each month.

Yessir...exactly what I needed to hear. Allyn Hinton's scenario is exactly as mine. CPT 03 USMC-CW4 USAR.

Because of some very inept USAR UA's, my wife and I plan to go to St Louis and "walk" my papers through...something I was told to do a long time ago by fellow former Marines and some good Army folks.

Really appreciate the response.
