Ok, here goes, this question was put to me via email and I do not have the definitive answer for him so I am putting out there or input:

My question is who would know about which Bu. number the H-34 went from "bent leg" landing gear to "A" frame landing gear. Most of the 144 series 34's were "bent leg" but somewhere between there and the mid to later 145 series there was a change to the "A' frame. Yes, I know, What the hell does he want to know this for?? Well, it seems that I have a picture (artists drawing) with a 34 and the BU # is a 150 series with "bent leg" gear and I think it's wrong. For some reason every time I look at it I get to thinking that something is wrong or, at least in my minds eye. I just can't help but believe that the picture is in error. Now, all I have to do is verify it. I just thought you might know someone off hand that would know. Any Ideas ???

Thanks in advance for any and all input.

According to "Sikorsky H-34: An Illustrated History", by Lennart Lundh, UH-34Ds prior to 148053, and SH/UH-34s prior to 147984 had the "bent leg" gear.

Re: New Question for all 34 personnel?

Like hma1369, and Paul have said the 147174 is before the 147984, and correct. When people rebuild a Bird, I believe they use what they can get. If it wasn't susposed to be on the Bird, it most likely was all they could find to use. Semper Fi, and READY-APP.

Re: New Question for all 34 personnel?

here goes what i can see in the book h-34 choctaw in action. there are several pictures of marine aircraft in action. of the ones i can make out numbers: one has bent leg with yl 75 and 147 as the first numbers, one has v gear with number 150225, and 148767 picking up asternuts with v type gear. the last photo i can make out is a navy aircraft with vc-1 with number 149376 and v type gear. maybe with this info and others that can be found, something can be determined.

Re: New Question for all 34 personnel?

I was in HMM162 in Vietnam in 1963 and crewed YS 63 . It was a 148 model and had the A or V as you call it landing gear.
